He definitely shouldn't be whining about the schedule. Especially since, I assume, he had a part in scheduling it (this tournament was announced earlier this year wasn't it?).

Still, it doesn't really matter. Win and none of this matters. No one cared about "upward rising arc" or "not quite ready to win the division" or whatever it was in October. We hang on the words of the people involved with our teams, but that's always way secondary to the on field/court product.

FWIW, the tournament was scheduled by Turgeon a few years back so Willard had no part in that. But that obviously doesn't excuse losses to two bad teams.

Excuses are like buttholes… I’ll stop there. Annoying to read that garbage.

Who left of any note from last year? Ian Martinez? He's actually playing more this year than last year.

Hakim Hart doesn't count. He gave Maryland 4 years.

If anything, Willard got lucky that Young and Scott (debatable how much he helps, but he's at least a legit D1 player) decided to return for a 5th year.

Imagine how putrid this team would be without those guys returning.

@B1GMBBall

Most points by a Maryland player in a true road game, in program history:
41 - Greivis Vasquez (2010 at Virginia Tech) & Len Bias (1986 at Duke)
40 - Joe Smith (1995 at Duke)
38 - Walt Williams (1992 at FSU)
37 - Jahmir Young (2023 at UCLA)

Greivis w/ a W;  Bias team lost.

Smith got a W

The Wizard got a L

Young w/ a W

Man that VT game was fun. Delayed for several hours due to a truck crash on campus then went to 3OT if I remember correctly. I think rang up like a $90 bar tab on nothing but $2 hot dogs and $3 beers.

That tab just for you, solo?  If so, that's a heck of a Homer appetite!

Still remember the Joe game very well. He won the game on a tip in at the buzzer.

It was like over an 8 hour stretch. We had gotten there a good bit before the planned tipoff for specials. Was then like a 3 hour delay, and then the game went super long. Fun night!

Yeah I still watch the highlights of that Joe Smith game from time to time. He was unstoppable.

Yes it has.  The best part of yesterday though was the offense.  They ran solid sets and converted.  Illinois did not have anyone who could stay in front of Young and that was a big difference.

Hart certainly counts.  He was a big part of last years team, and he left.  I don't care if he gave Maryland 10 years.  A loss is a loss.

As for Willard, I still like his style of basketball, what I do not like is the excuses.  That said, if you have everyone shooting at you, I guess it is his way of circling the wagons.

I think Willard can win at Maryland, but the university, IMO needs to determine what they want their programs to be.  They have committed millions in facilities, but the landscape has changed.  Today's Blue Chip players care less about shiny buildings, they want to get paid.

My big concern about Willard is he needs to adapt to what brings players to Maryland and stop acting so sullen about it.

I do think he is a good coach.  The game plan and the way they attacked Illinois, was not something we have seen since Gary.

According to John Rothstein, via The Athletic, starting next season the Big Ten will invite just the top 15 teams in the 18-team league to the conference tournament. They will still play a 20-game conference schedule.
