It has more to do with the transfer portal opening today and potentially being unable to field a team with all the expected departures.9 Tourney appearances in 20 years doesn’t exactly scream “our program is too good for the NIT.” Villanova was willing to go. A few more games couldn’t hurt, but whatever.

Well that’s fair thanks. I’m surprised it opens before the season is truly over considering over 100 teams are in postseason. I know football does the same, I wonder why.

As expected, Maryland is not part of the NIT or CBI fields. All indications were that, much like many other major-conference programs, they would decline those bids if received.

It's that way in football because of the school calendar. The window opens right after the regular season in early December so that transferring players have time to choose a new school and get enrolled in time for the spring semester, which most places starts early-mid January. If the player isn't enrolled, he's not eligible for spring practices and has to wait until the summer before he can formally work out with his new team.
As for basketball, there doesn't seem to be any sort of obvious impediment to opening the transfer window sometime like early April, so I'm not sure why they do it so soon now.

Just don't see the point in declining an NIT bid; it's not like they were an NCAA snub. Give Young and Scott a couple of more college games and some sort of tournament experience for DHS, Kaiser, even Lamothe if you want to give him some playing time.
Surely they could survive without Batchelor and Swanton-Rodger.

They did us a favor. WIllard’s Maryland team is like Bennett’s UVA team, but worse. Or not. They were both very difficult to watch.

Could be the players didn't want to do it. We made comments multiple times this year that none of them really seemed to be enjoying the season.

Once you get past the opening round of the NIT, I like the NIT (in the opening rd, you have too many teams that just don't want to be there). There are some good teams, and I agree with the idea of utilizing that time.
That said, MD finished the year under .500.
They didn't even deserve to be playing in the NIT imo.

Generally I very much dislike the concept of declining a bid to the NIT, but can't muster any sincere disappointment in not getting to watch another game of this year's team.

I'm guessing the team did the math and saw no benefit at all in extending the season to get beat by the likes of Bradley or North Texas. Best to flush the mess as soon as you can.

Bennett gets pretty close to an indefinite pass for his championship and consistent track record of excellence (UMBC loss notwithstanding) but man when UVA is mediocre, watching that team is like getting your teeth pulled. I don't think they've ever had a tempo ranking better than 300.

That's what I sort of suspect. Or it's at least a part of it. If not the players saying "We don't want to play that" then the staff saying "A lot of these guys didn't play like they cared when it REALLY mattered, why go play a tournament that doesn't really matter".
