Orioles.com: Wes Moore: New Orioles lease 'a big priority'

https://www.mlb.com/...of-camden-yards

Sarasota wasn’t the only stop on Moore’s trip south. He, Angelos and Maryland Stadium Authority board chair Craig Thompson first went to Atlanta on Thursday for a specific purpose -- to check out The Battery, a 2.25 million square-foot mixed-use development adjacent to the Braves’ Truist Park.

Saw that. So for those wondering why there’s no lease yet, it’s because $600M for the stadium isn’t enough. John wants to get into the real estate development business, and he wants the state to subsidize him. Taxpayers get the risk, while the Angelos’s get the rewards.

The greed knows no bounds

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

"Now OPS sucks.  Got it."

"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."

"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

Been there. So they want the equivalent of power plant live to be adjacent to the park. Yuck.

Been there too. This will be a ghost town except for the 8-9 Ravens home games.

I for one just can't get enough of these Potemkin villages with their $20 cheeseburgers and $15 pints. Here for it!

I disagree, they would have to improve to be the worst.

I had the same thought.  Hogan left them with 600 M to spend but it is pretty clear that Moore and John Boy are going to go blowing past that number.

So have I. I thought it was really nice that they had a kids area. Some of the kids games had cheesey prizes. The food was also better in the stadium.

Since this stadium isn't in downtown Atlanta there is plenty of space to expand for this type of venture. Baltimoe doesn't have the space to do it. Plus downtown is not the place you may want to stay.

The city of Baltimore is a disaster and getting worse by the year, not better. Aside from Ravens games (which are getting less tolerable thanks to all the weed smell and trash around the stadium) absolutelty nothing brings me in to the city anymore.

Yeah, it kinda works for Atlanta based on the location. Nothing around the stadium. In Baltimore's case it's building a second tourist trap like the harbor already has but a mile up the road.

Harborplace and the Gallery are essentially closed, so I suppose this could work with a redevelopment of that area.  Turn Harborplace into more of a park, and then move the shopping/Cheesecake Factory to the stadium area.

You've already got the casino and Top Golf on Russell Street, so maybe you could extend in that direction?  I guess you'd have to go that way, because you're blocked in the other three directions. That ends up pretty far from Camden Yards, though.  It's much closer to the Ravens.  Nearer Camden Yards, the trick would be to find land without eliminating stadium parking.  Too bad they built that stupid view-blocking, taxpayer money-losing hotel, because that would be a good location.

Actually, the whole thing sounds like a bad idea to me, too.

Harborplace (and the Gallery) are being redeveloped finally under David Bramble.

Yeah, the city would definitely need to coordinate what's happening there with whatever they want to do at Camden Yards.  I didn't think a final decision had been made on what exactly the new Harborplace would be, but I could be wrong.  I think the Gallery is a lost cause - who the heck would open a shopping mall in 2023?

I decided to actually read the MLB.com article, and it's hard to disagree with this part, at least.

“The thing that I also took away [from The Battery] is that that can’t be it,” Moore said. “We’ve got to make sure that there’s economic energy that’s taking place around the ballpark. We’ve got to support entrepreneurs. We’ve got to support small businesses. We’ve got to support the community that’s around it.”

Another aspect of The Battery that made an impression on Moore was that it’s walkable, which is beneficial to both residents and tourists alike. He believes the mass-transit component in Baltimore would be an added bonus.

Moore made it clear he isn’t looking to create an exact replica of what he saw in Atlanta, though.

“I think that what they did is right for them. What we’re going to do in Baltimore and in Maryland is going to be right for us,” Moore said. “And I love the assets that we have to be able to make this a reality.”

If they want to benefit the community then don’t build more retail and restaurants, build affordable housing and a grocery store.

As someone who happily lives very close to Orioles Park (btw I always love when I come on here and see someone bash where I live) we actually could use more restaurants to the west of OPACY.

Parenthetical part not directed at you Mike to be clear.

I think people are just pissed at Angelos for holding the lease hostage over this. I’m not at all against further development in that area. Think it could be cool.
