When you are down by 4 with 20 seconds or less left, you need a three. Teams always try to settle for two and it never works.

Maryland drops three spots to #25 in KenPom's rankings after this loss.

I didn't mind going for 2 there. The Terps could not throw the ball in the ocean from 3 and their pressure was giving MSU fits. I thought the refs gave MSU 7 seconds on the inbound, and the TO may have come late. The inbounder threw the ball right to Martinez. That said, the outside shooting killed them. I thought they took too many unsettled 3's in the first half but in the second half they got better looks but with little success.

Yeah, when down 3 with a bit more time I wanted to attack the rim (Izzo fouled anyways, making this moot), but down 4 with 20 I'd lean towards a jumper if you can find a good look. I know they were shooting poorly, but don't think that necessarily applies to the next attempt, as long as its not a desperation type shot.
I do think going for two and hoping for a turnover is still a valid option considering the way the pressure was working. And still a chance of MSU missing a FT if they don't turn if over. But then you need a triple anyways.

If they shoot well, I think they'll win. If they shoot poorly, I think they'll lose.

In all seriousness so many of these games just come down to which team can make shots on a given night.

Overall, I love what Willard is getting out these guys. The loss last night did sting but even a struggling Michigan St team is going to be tough at home. I'd love nothing more than to bounce back by whipping Penn State's ass.

I think this team has over achieved, They are a small team that plays in a big league size wise. They do not shoot well, but they play defense with great energy and have been able to generate offense off of defense and also do a good job getting to the rim. I do not like to pick on one player, but IMO, if Don Carey was the 40% shooter from deep that he was the last 2 years, this team would be a lot more dangerous. A good shooter from deep on his game last night, means a Maryland win. That and Reese not acting like a 12 year old.

To his credit, I did see him on the sidelines standing and cheering and greeting players coming to the bench in the second half. And he always plays hard defensively even when he's shooting terribly. Seems like a good dude and teammate, hope that he can figure out his shooting woes and make a contribution.

I agree. I feel like I see so many times a team is down 4 or even 5 around 20 seconds to go and they just look for an easy two, hope for a turnover which if they don't get they foul, usually the teams best shooter gets the inbound in those spots. They make both and all they did was erase 6 or 7 seconds off the clock without changing the margin.
Seems equivalent to throwing a check down when you need to go 80 yards in about 20 seconds with no timeouts. You kinda need to make the lower % shot or two to have a chance. A couple high % shots don't help at all.

Actual time off from the moment the ref handed over the ball to the time the whistle blew was about 5.4 to 5.5 seconds. Izzo was watching the other refs hand, standing next to the ref holding the whistle, and probably decided he would call the TO as soon as the 5th arm swing started. It was definitely close.
On the second attempt that was deflected by Emilien, it looked to me like it was going to take an absolutely perfectly placed toss for it to not be stolen by Martinez.

Did Carey and Long sit the whole 2nd half yesterday? Not much of a message to Long, but that's a big switch away from Carey (deservedly so, IMO).

Yes, they both sat the entire second half. Martinez played all 20 minutes.
