So Byron Leftwich was seen at the basketball game last night with Locksley.

Interesting.  Leftwich would be a good get as an OC and maybe be able to impact recruiting.

Given that he’s from DC, I’m sure he was just catching up with Locks. Seriously doubt the OC position is in play there, but who knows.

It would probably go over better versus if he were in town to interview with the Ravens.

While things are quiet on the OC front, Locksley may need to keep an eye on the other side of the ball. Our old buddy Kevin Steele just left Miami to be Saban’s DC, so the Hurricanes are on the lookout. With Brian Williams’ successful first season, his proven recruiting abilities, and being a Miami native, I would think he’d be on Cristobal’s list of names to call.

As it turns out, doesn't sound like Williams was ever under consideration and Tulane DC Lance Guidry, who only took the job last month after being the DC at Marshall last season, appears to be the choice at Miami.

Honestly surprised Williams hasn't gotten more attention for other positions, whether it's as a high-profile defensive coordinator or as a head coach. The job he did with the defense last year coupled with his recruiting prowess seem to make him an ideal candidate.

Yeah, he would have seemed a natural fit in South Florida, especially given Cristobal's emphasis on local recruiting. Hard to argue with the choice they made either. Marshall had an excellent defense last season.

Absolutely fantastic hire. Getting a guy like that on the staff is a huge get.

Locksley must have a QB coach in mind who he'll be sharing the OC duties with.

I hope that Co-OC part is just in name only so they can pay him higher than a typical TE coach, and that a real play-caller is in the works. I'll bet Khalil Tate's photo still shows up on milk-cartons as missing after the way his production vanished from Arizona's offense once Sumlin got there.

The guy can recruit though, so that's a plus.

Sounds like Locksley is expected to take a more active role in play-calling this season, so will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

Maryland makes Sumlin's hire official. In addition to being the co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, he'll serve as the team's associate head coach.

Sumlin is a good hire.  The Co-OC thing is a bit strange, and I would worry, about too many cooks in the kitchen if Locks is calling plays.

Locksley won't be calling plays, but will probably play a bigger role in weekly game planning and may have more input situationally (short yardage, red zone, etc.). They've had co-offensive coordinators for the last few years, but only one play-caller. It won't be a Michigan situation, where three different guys are calling plays.

I'd be more worried about Locksley calling plays at all. Not that he isn't good at it, but as the head coach he has enough game-management to oversee without taking on play-calling. I know there are exceptions, but head coaches who take on play-calling seem to have more than the typical share of WTF decision making incidents.

Sumlin’s contract: 2 years, $900K plus moving expenses, and allowances for hotel and vehicle.

Credit to the athletic department for clearly making a much bigger investment in Locksley's assistant coach salaries. Adding two former college head coaches and a former NFL offensive coordinator to your staff is a big deal.

Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach: Brian Williams

Co-Defensive Coordinator/Safeties Coach: Charlie Strong

Special Teams Coordinator/Outside Linebackers Coach: James Thomas, Jr.
