They seem to think they can improve the swings of some of these guys. They are getting them very young so it is possible.
And for the first time ever, I trust that they can. Player development for the win.

I don't have much an opinion on this one. It's a classic "time will tell" pick. I imagine they see something they think they can unlock. It might also just be that they feel a need to dedicate more funds to him since he's a draft-eligible sophomore.

I hope they can turn some of that into pitching. If I were a pitching coach on the minors I'd feel a sense of disappointment that they're giving me so little to work with, and feel so little confidence in the coaches ability to develop them.
I think that is the plan. I can not wait to see who our Justin Verlander is?

I wasn't pleased by this pick, nor Beavers, but at least get why they took Beavers. He has real upside. Wagner is a defensive liability with good power. I don't like potential DH's taken early in the draft.

I think you're overrating the value of pick #42. Yes, you can find an All-Star level player in that range, but its very rare.
For pick #42 specifically...only 3 guys in history have ever accrued more than 10 total WAR for their career. Only 8 have more than 1. Since 1965. 60% of the #42 overall picks never reached the majors.
PIcks #40-44 (so not just one random pick) have a total of 2 Hall of Fame level guys with 50+ WAR (Joey Votto and Fred Lynn). Nobody else has reached 30 WAR. Only 6 other guys reached 20 career WAR (Kevin Tapani, Larry Gura, Mookie Wilson, Dennis Leonard, Bob Knepper, and Jon Lieber). Even if you ignore the first 20 years of the draft as being unsophisticated, the odds of finding a good player are quite low. Only 21 guys if I counted right have gotten to double digits in WAR for their career.
I wouldn't waste much time worrying about position limiting the ceiling of someone taken in this range. I think a DH or lumbering 1B/COF would be just fine with pick #42. Anyone who makes the majors in that range is already a successful pick compared to their peers.

His defense isn’t bad. I think he can improve to be a 50 at third
I've also heard some think he'd be decent at 2B where obviously the pop plays much differently.
