Loved this. Really enjoyed getting a good breakout down. We should in my opinion, cut all the potential cap savings players. Though Villanueva has helped he’s been mostly a liability and saving 6 million is a no brainer. Then attack the draft for a tackle. 24 million to play with is a solid number and I’m hopeful for JC Jackson as well

Nice work.  Thank you for not using Spotrac!!

A couple more small details:

Guys drafted in the 2nd-7th rounds of the 2019 draft are eligible for proven performance escalators.  For the Ravens, this is Boykin and Powers.  They'll get a bump up to the lowest RFA tag (Right of First Refusal), which Overthecap currently estimates at ~$2.4M for 2022.  Boykin gets cut for certain.  Powers gets kept at that price.

Mekari will nearly certainly get the 2nd round RFA tag.  That'll be ~$3.9M in 2022.

$3M of Boyle's $5M salary is guaranteed.  If he's cut and they have to pay that $3M, then it isn't any cap savings.  But if they have offset language and they can recoup that money if he signs for $3M (or more) elsewhere, then they could save up to that $3M against the cap by cutting him.  It'd be a gamble to cut him, but potential for some savings depending on how his contract is written.

Koch would be $2.1M in cap savings. I think he's still a good punter but he's not longer one of the best, IMO.  Wouldn't be surprised if they draft or sign an undrafted punter and consider moving on from Koch.

I liked the JC Jackson suggestion.

Gonna be way more than $10M per year (I know the article said at least) to get him.  $10M doesn't even make you a top-15 CB.

I'd be surprised if the Ravens have enough space to place at the top of the CB market.  One big splash seems doable, but with Humphrey and Peters already in town, another hugely paid CB seems unlikely to me.  If they cut Peters, then it becomes more plausible.

Good stuff.  I agree with cutting all the cap savings players, especially AV.

I think if they were signing a CB like Jackson , then Peters will likely be cut.

I'd cut the following:

Calais Campbell
Brandon Williams
Sammy Watkins
Alejandro Villanueva
Sam Koch
Jimmy Smith
Justin Houston
Latavius Murray
Devonte Freeman
Pernell McPhee

You clear up $46M in cap space. You take on $4.3M in dead money. Earl Thomas' $10M of dead comes off the books. Comes to $51.7M in new cap space.

LJ's cap hit goes up $20.1M. Still have $31.6M in new cap space, just from these transactions. Can of course get a couple extra mil if your going deeper into cuts like your Eric Tomlinson, Justin Ellis, and others.

Didn't list Peters. I'd like to have him back. He's another $10M in savings but $5.5M dead if they go that route.

Cap savings if cut (dead money in parens):

$6M Villanueva ($3.25M)

$5.845M Young ($3.38M)

$3M James ($250k)

$2.54M Boykin ($214k)

$2.1M Koch ($1.05M)

$1.07M Oliver (none)

$0.965M Ferguson ($226k)

Possible restructures (numbers based taking 2022 salary to $1M and converting rest to bonus split across remaining contract):

Stanley $6.375M

Humphrey $7.2M

Zeitler $2.5M

Boyle $2M

Bowser $1.33M

Tucker $1.25M

Edwards $1.125M

Clark $875k

I would 100% restructure Stanley, Humphrey, Bowser, and Tucker.  Others I would try to wait and only do it in an emergency.

Other cap implications are going to include thing like 2021 ULTBE bonuses that were actually earned (Jimmy Smith, Tavon Young, Justin Houston and others may have quite a bit of these).  Any bonuses that weren't pre-emptively counted against the 2021 cap but the players earned will come off of the 2022 cap.

You can't cut free agents :)

Only Koch and Villanueva are signed for next year.  The rest are gone anyways.  No savings.

I'd be open to bringing Campbell and Smith back at reduced costs. That's about it.

James needs to prove healthy and productive or he can easily be cut. Do we really cut Young. Might restructure him. Kind of significant dead money to cut him and hes a CB. Boykin is gone.

It doesn't clear any cap space, though.  The Ravens 2022 cap number already doesn't include those guys.

Clearing space is nice, but what’s the reason/who are they going to sign? After retaining some of their own, I’m not sure which UFA they’re looking for?

What do you all think?

This is required reading for anyone who is interested in anything cap-related that the Ravens do.  Amazingly thorough, as always.

With restructures, extensions or flat out cut or trades, they can clear a significant amount of cap space.

With that said, I could see them going after one big name. Someone at a position of need that could make a huge difference, like JC Jackson, Gillmore or Davis. Possibly Jesse Bates or Mathieu at FS. I could also see them possibly going after offensive line help, if Bozeman goes they could focus on Jensen as their big name.

Personally I wouldn't mind them kicking the tires on Lavonte David to come in and play next to Queen. Queen was serviceable on the weakside. David would bring a solid run stopper with good cover skills on the strong side. Something we always seem to struggle with are TE's and RB's out of the backfield. If you can get a combo of Bates as your big FA worh David on a cap friendly deal, the defense would be looking great, as long as some pieces come back healthy.
