Since Wieters was bumped, and a thread was started on Big Ben McDonald... I'll start a thread on Hammonds.

Over 3,000 ML ab's, and a career .787 OPS guy.  Can't say he wasn't productive. Awful lot of guys would kill for that career.

Absolutely believed he was going to be a monster though.

Terrific athlete. Great speed out of the box as a RHH.

His '94 season, I thought was the precursor to major things.
He was a productive, and oft forgotten part of the '97 team.

Had a big year with the Rockies in 2000.

Just could not stay on the field. Most games played in a season was 128 in '02 with Milwaukee.

I feel like expectations were higher for him than McDonald.  Hung around the league for quite a while.  Some decent #'s only 1 AS appearance though.  I too forgot that he was a big contributor to the '97 team.

A real 5 tool guy, that didnt have the career projected.

I was a big fan of his.

He was fun to watch and root for.

Funny trivia, he was selected one pick ahead of Jeter, who had already told everybody it was the Yankees or F off.

As a kid, I think he was the first player I had heard being referred to as a 5 tool guy.

I always liked Bill James's line about Hammonds, how Hammonds was described as the next Rickey Henderson except that he didn't walk, which is basically like being the next Dolly Parton, except flat-chested.

I was at this game.   Whenever I think of Hammonds, I always think about the noise his bat made when he made solid contact.  It sounded like a cannon going off.  I suspect, he would have been big with the talent evaluators even today.  His exit velocity had to be big.

His dad tried to get him to scale back his game to stay healthy and his response was, you taught me how to play and always give it 150%, thats the only way I know.

I like this quote of his:

"Anybody would like to have a Hall of Fame career ... " Hammonds said. "But you are talking about someone who was drafted in the first round in 1992 and here it is 2005, and I'm still able to put on a major league uniform."

That's the kind of quote you hear from Mark Turgeon

I always likened Jeffrey Hammonds to Freddy Lynn.  They both played so damn hard they wound up getting hurt.

My favorite player in the early to mid 90s.

Not sure I can pick one, but he was definitely in the group.  Back then I thought he was gonna be the next Barry Bonds, tons of speed and plenty of potential for big time power.

Those were really good teams with a lot of good players.  Only a couple guys on the rosters who weren't legit fun to watch.

More early 90s when he was just breaking in. By 96-97 Moose was my fav. Not that I didnt still like Hammonds. Was pissed when we traded him to Cincy for Willie Greene.

Ugh...that trade was so bad.  How is it possible that Pat Gillick could make such a trade.  Downright Thriftian.

No clue. Not only was Hammonds the better player he also had one additional year of team control. Was thinking the same thing about it being a Thriftian trade. I had to go look it up and make sure Thrift wasnt the one who made it.

Was that on Gillick or is that Angelos micromanaging?

Didnt Gillick leave the Orioles because of this?
