It's already happened.  Chris Davis was one such guy when he signed.  Forget exactly where his deal ranked at the time but it was first page.  Tejada wasn't too far off either.

Tejada's 6 year $72M deal in 2003 would be $125M today.

Davis's 7 year $161M deal in 2016 (not factoring the deferred) would be $214M today.

The very best players today are going to command how much more than those deals?

The Dodgers (when factoring in luxury tax) are spending over $500M on their roster this year.

My guess, is that if the best player / one of the true very best players are available in FA... that the O's aren't going to play at the levels necessary.

That doesn't mean I don't think they aren't going to spend money, I do.
Just not at the top top of the market.

Real-world inflation is irrelevant, can't look at that and make a comparison.  Look at baseball inflation.  Baseball money goes up way faster than real-world money most of the time (maybe a recent exception given high inflation rates).

At the time Tejada signed, where did his deal rank in MLB?  Same for Davis?  I haven't looked it up buy would guess both were easily inside the top-10.  Vlad Guerrero signed right after Tejada for less money total (tiny bit more per year for 1 less year) and he was definitely a top player in the sport.

The argument on your side is that each team has more shared National revenue, etc.
They have more to spend.

Yes, those contracts would have been Top 10 at the time.

My thought is being willing to have spent Top 10 in 2003, and 2016... at 2003 and 2016 prices.... doesn't mean the O's are going to be willing to spend at the top of the market for the best of the best in 2025 and beyond.

Maybe I'll be surprised.

I'll bet against it happening for every individual guy, but eventually it'll happen for someone.  Not quite #16 over a #1 seed long odds for each opportunity, but #14 over #3 maybe.

FWIW, according to this:

https://legacy.baseb...t-paid-players/

Chris Davis is at T-61st total, T-90th by AAV. By quick eyeball it looks like around T-20th total and T-23rd AAV ignoring all after 2016. I'm ignoring deferrals (looks like they reduced Ohtani but nobody else).

Yeah, he's talking Top 10 at the time.

I loved Crush, and was in favor of that extension... and while wrong on that call, I didn't think he was a Top 10 player, but I get Mackus' point.

I do think Tejada qualifies.

Right, well outside top 10 as a contract at the time even, though still quite high. The list doesn't have Tejada, but I imagine it was pretty high for the time, though dwarfed by Arod's 252M and Jeter's 189M.

I don't think anyone considered Davis close to a top 10 type of player, he was quite clearly capable of having very good or very mediocre years. Tejada was much more consistently good and had an MVP, he was definitely a huge catch.

I'm pretty sure Albert Belle was the top paid in the game when he signed for 5/65M. He'd had 5 top 8 MVP finishes in 6 years.

MASN:

https://www.masnspor...er-hit-by-pitch

Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson hit on the field earlier today in Sarasota, went through more defensive drills and is progressing well, according to manager Brandon Hyde. However, Hyde added that Henderson remains “a little bit away from game activity.”

That isn’t good.

Time is running out on Henderson with the last exhibition next Monday in D.C. The Orioles break camp the previous day after playing the Braves in North Port.

The Orioles traveled to Fort Myers today to face the Red Sox. Livan Soto hit leadoff and started at shortstop.

Henderson isn’t expected to make the Opening Day roster if he can’t get back into the spring lineup.

"It’s gonna be really tough,” Hyde said. “You’ve got to get some at-bats. Hopefully we can get him in games sometime soon. But he needs to get at-bats and feel good before we make that decision."

Henderson was 1-for-6 when he exited the Feb. 27 game against the Blue Jays after one inning. The injury occurred after he raced to his right and made a leaping catch of Bo Bichette’s line drive.

Here's some probably silly math: Peter bought the team for $173M and was willing to give Belle 65M a few years later. 37.5% of the sale price.

Rubinstein bought the team for 1.725B. 37.5% is 647M. That gets you in the ballpark of top in the game.

They've got 6 ST games left. Get him some ABs over the weekend and let it rip next Thursday.

If I was convinced the O's could sign Gunnar once he reaches free agency then I would trade him for sure. Best of both worlds. Stack the roster and only miss on having him for a year or two.

This smells....a lot. Not sure how it can be reported as a mild strain almost a month ago. To now Elias is hoping that the IL stint is measured in days and not weeks. And really what the heck does that mean. I can say 365 days as easily as 52 weeks......lol.

I am hopeful he doesn't miss all of April.

Get him back after the ASB and hope you can get the last WC spot.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Cal Raleigh just left the Boras Corp.  My guess would be he's interested in staying (extending) in Seattle and he's just taking some initiative to make the happen.  He's interested in figuring something out.  We'll see.

(from MLBTR) The Mariners and catcher Cal Raleigh are reportedly finalizing an extension, which is pending a physical. It’s a six-year, $105MM deal for the Excel Sports Management client, which starts this year. He had previously agreed to a $5.6MM salary in 2025 to avoid arbitration, so this deal adds five years and $99.4MM in terms of new money. He was slated to hit free agency after 2027, so this deal buys out three free agent seasons and there’s also a vesting option for 2031. Raleigh gets full no-trade protection.
