Well seeing as how I am right in 4A, one of my two is now the clear favorite, one of my 2A is still alive, and both 1A still alive I would say I still am 4/4 not sure how you do math. You really got a thing for me it is a little unnerving.

The 2019 MPSSAA semifinal round holds many familiar faces, including many of the most winningest programs in the state, including the top three that head MPSSAA’s list in playoff victories - Dunbar (61), Fort Hill (58), and Damascus (55).

The quartet of 4A semifinalists - Quince Orchard, Wise, Northwest and Old Mill, have accounted for the last eight 4A state titles, and ten of the last 12. Quince Orchard won the 4A state title in 2007, and again last year, finishing as runner-up in ‘16 and ‘17. Old Mill won the 4A in ‘09 and ‘11, and was runner-up in ‘14. Wise won its first state title in 2012, after being runner-up in ‘09 and ‘10, then ran off a 3-peat from ‘15-17. Northwest won back-to-back 4A state championships in ‘13 and ‘14. Of the 20 teams that have played in the last ten 4A state title games, these four have claimed 13 of the 20 title game berths.

Damascus and Linganore, both 3A state semifinalists, are two of the most legendary programs in the state, as the Swarmin’ Hornets not only rank 3rd in MPSSAA history in playoff wins, but are tied with Dunbar for the second most state titles won, with 10. Linganore ranks 5th all-time in MPSSAA history in post-season victories, with 40, and are just one of eight schools to win at least 6 state titles. Huntingtown, who won a regional championship in 2018, made five straight Final Four appearances from ‘09 through ‘13. Mervo earned it’s first semifinal appearance last year. Damascus is 14-3 in the semifinal round, while Linganore is 12-1.

In 2A, Middletown (23), Elkton (21), and Potomac (17), have all made the post-season 17 times or more, and all have won state championships, including the former notching a 3-peat. New Town, who won a 2A regional championship last year, were 1A state runner-ups in 2012.

The 1A foursome have accounted for each of the last 13 Class 1A state titles, including Dunbar with 7, Fort Hill with 5, and Catoctin in 2009. Dunbar captured a pair of 3-peats in that span, from ‘06-08 and ‘10-12, while Fort Hill won four straight from ‘13-16, before the Poets won in ‘17, and the Sentinels last year. Cambridge, meanwhile, has won three 1A state titles.

Thirteen of the sixteen teams that remain have won a state title, while two others have finished as runner-up. Eleven have won a state title in the last 15 years, while ten have won a state championship in the last 10 seasons. Among the 16 coaches in the semifinals, 9 have won state titles.

Coming close to the end...here goes:

Calvert Hall vs Loyola - The 100th renewal of one of the oldest Catholic school rivalries in the country. CHC comes in with an 8-3 record, Loyola at 8-1. CHC endured the rigors of the MIAA A Conference, losing to Mt St Joe twice and McDonogh once. Loyola, having left the A Conference two years ago, played a less than demanding independent schedule which included four pubic school teams, three of whom couldn't make the playoffs even under the new expanded format. The one team Loyola beat that did get into the playoffs, Dulaney, was destroyed in the first round, 49-6. The only A Conference team the Dons played was cellar dweller Gilman. Among Calvert Hall's wins was a 35-0 whitewashing of B Conference champion Pallotti. It was Pallotti's only loss of the season. Because of the nature of the rivalry and the historic aspects of this game in particular, I expect a tough, hard fought contest. While the Dons have closed the gap somewhat between themselves and the Cardinals, they haven't done so to the point where they can beat CHC. Cardiac Cardinals-28, Fighting Sons of Don Diego-18.

New Town @ Potomac - The New Town Titans will trek down to PG County for the second straight week, hoping to duplicate what they did against Frederick Douglass last Saturday. Each team is 1-1 vs common opponents Milford Mill and Douglass. NT is coming off two straight tense, nerve racking games in which the outcome was in doubt until the end. One wonders how much they have left in the tank. Also of concern is the limited production from the Titans offense over the last five games. Take away the second Eastern Tech game, and NT only scored 50 points in the other four, which included a 16-14 loss to a so-so Overlea team. I look for the Titan defense to turn in another outstanding performance this weekend, but it won't be enough to overcome the shortcomings on offense. Potomac-14, New Town-7.

It should state starting defense. Westminster did not score a touchdown versus the Mustangs. Instead, they scored on a pair of Evan Warren field goals. Of the two others, one was a non-offensive touchdown and the other was when the starting defense wasn’t on the field. In all, either with the first or second team defense on the field, the Mustangs have allowed just five touchdowns all season.

Elkton also beat Oakdale this season as well. They have 3 wins over top 50 opponents. Should be a good game vs Middletown. Well coached and fundamental teams have hung with Elkton early this season. But the athletic combo of Watters, Ewing and Vass tend to break games wide open around halftime. Liberty was a great team, they just couldn't run with Elkton. I don't know much about Middletown, but if they have some athletes, this could be a great game. If not, I'd be surprised if Ewing and Watters don't overwhelm them at some point.

4A State Semifinal

#1 Quince Orchard (12-0) v #4 Northwest (11-1)

Quince Orchard - John Kelley 6th season 69-9, 15-4 p/o
Northwest - Mike Neubeiser 9th season 84-27, 17-5 p/o

Quince Orchard O: 53.3 D: 8.3 PD: 45.0
Northwest O: 38.8 D: 9.8 PD: 29.0

The Cougars and Jaguars go together like the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s, except both have mini-mansions, and drive Volvo’s, but the sentiment is there. This twenty year’ish’ rivary ranks among the best in the state.

Quince Orchard has won 6 straight, breaking the 11-11 deadlock prior to the 2016 season, taking a 17-11 edge. The Cougars have won 8 of the 10 meetings since John Kelley has been at the helm at Quince Orchard. Northwest holds the 4-3 margin in post-season games, though the Cougars have won the last two.

The Cougars won the regular season meetings in ‘14 and ‘15, only to lose weeks later in the playoffs. The Cougars won 52-28 and 28-7 in league play in ‘14 and ‘15, before the Jaguars extinguished their rivals 28-21 and 50-40 in mid-November. Since then, it’s been all ‘QO’. The Cougars have won their last four regular season meetings with the Jags, and put away their foes 31-20 and 35-0 in the last two post-seasons.

A year before Kelley took over from Dave Mencarini at Quince Orchard, Northwest extinguished the Cougars, 28-20, before going on to win the first of their back-to-back 4A state titles. The year before that, in 2012, the Cougars throttled the Jaguars in the playoffs, 41-7. In their very first meeting in the post-season in ‘06, the Cougars won a shootout, 56-35.

The two MoCo juggernauts have played in 7 of the last 8 4A state title games, between them. Quince Orchard is 7-0 in state semifinal games, while Northwest is 4-3.

The ‘19 Cougars are the MPSSAA’s highest scoring team, averaging 53.3 points per game, and also lead the state with a +45.0 point differential. The Cougars have won 25 straight games versus MPSSAA competition, dating back to last year’s opener. Outside of their matchups with Damascus and Northwest, the Cougars have won every game with a running clock. Those two games with the Hornets and Jags are the only two games the Cougars have not scored at least 47 points.

The Cougars hold five top 25 wins - #3 Damascus (21-7), #22 Richard Montgomery (63-14), #4 Northwest (17-7), #23 Walter Johnson twice (47-7, 55-21 p/o), and another top 50 win - Arundel (69-32). Northwest is 4-1 versus the top 25, with a pair of wins over both #8 Paint Branch and #22 Richard Montgomery.

Friday night, Quince Orchard ran out to a 21-0 lead, then held a 42-13 margin at intermission, before landing with a 69-32 win over high-powered Arundel. Marquez Cooper rushed for 243 yards and four scores on 19 carries. The Jaguars had to beat Paint Branch a second time, and did just that when Ryan Beach took in the game-clincher from 16 yards out with 1:53 to play to put away the Panthers.

The Jaguars have scored 40 or more points on everyone this season not named Quince Orchard or Paint Branch, including playoff wins over Clarksburg, 48-14, and Richard Montgomery, 42-3.

Cooper is the MPSSAA’s touchdown leader, with 38, and ranks second in rushing yards, with 1,981. Junior quarterback Brian Plummer has thrown 73-117 for 1,462 yards and 22 touchdowns, with 5 interceptions. Ryan Swigart has 26 receptions for 640 yards and 9 touchdowns. Senior Charles Bell is an exceptional player on both sides of the ball. 6’4 220 linebacker ‘Chop’ Robinson (58 solo tackles), who holds an offer from Alabama, leads the Cougars defense. Toddreis Baltimore and Larry Hackey bolster the secondary, and both have 6 interceptions, while 6’2 280 Steven Williams (32 solo tackles) anchors the line.

The Jaguars defense, who held the Cougars to a season-low 17 points in their first meeting, is headlined by 6’3 258 defensive end Dominique Perry. Perry’s bookend, 6’2 225 junior Tyler Denner had three tackles for loss in the Paint Branch win. Beach is the Jaguars leader in receptions (36) and touchdown receptions (12), while Kaden Prather leads the team in receiving yards (753, 7 TDs). To add to Jordan Morse’s riches, Isiah Williams has caught 9 touchdowns. Ahjani Terry has rushed for 860 yards and 15 touchdowns, while Joe Bruno averages 10.5 yards per carry, and rushed for 8 touchdowns. Junior BJ Howard adds versatility.

Cooper has moved to second all-time on the MPSSAA touchdowns list, with 97, and has amassed 5,201 rushing yards in his three year varsity career with the Cougars.

Both Coach Kelley (15-4, .789) and Coach Neubeiser (17-5, .773) rank among the top 10 all-time on the MPSSAA post-season win percentage list, at 8th and 9th, respectively.

Damascus O: 41.5 D: 7.6 PD: 33.9
Huntingtown O: 34.5 D: 6.2 PD: 28.3

The Swarmin’ Hornets won their tenth straight game convincingly, over the defending 3A champion Franklin Indians, 30-13. Huntingtown, one of five undefeated teams remaining, after shutting out 8 seed Wilde Lake, 35-0.

Damascus is looking for their fourth state title in five years, and seventh in 17 years. The Hornets are 95-7 since 2012, and 65-3 versus MPSSAA competition since 2015. The Swarmin’ Hornets have not allowed an offensive touchdown in any first half of the last ten games, and one touchdown in the first three quarters of the last ten games.

Huntingtown have won seven games with a running clock, and held 9 of their 12 opponents to 8 points or less, and 11 of 12 to 14 points or less. The Hurricanes have three top 25 wins, including a 21-14 win over #18 North Point, and a pair over #24 St Charles (21-20, 17-8 p/o).

Friday night, the Swarmin’ Hornets held the Indians to one offensive touchdown, and built a 16-0 halftime lead thanks to a 90 yard pick-6 in the final minute of the first half. Chris Shaw took the first offensive play of the second half 82 yards to the house, to give the hosts a 23-0 lead, before settling for a 30-13 win, and earn their 18th semifinal berth in school history.

The Hurricanes defense suffocated Wilde Lake last Friday, not allowing the Wildecats a first down until midway through the fourth quarter. The ‘Canes allowed the ‘Cats just 27 yards before their final drive. Quarterback Trent Connolly rushed for 77 yards and two scores, and threw for 85 yards and a score. Vernon Powell recorded three sacks for the ‘Canes.

The Swarmin’ Hornets offense is led by Chris Shaw, who has rushed for 911 yards and 21 touchdowns on 103 carries, adding a pair of punt returns for scores. Quarterback Michael O’Neil has thrown 70-115 for 1,124 yards and 13 touchdowns, with 5 interceptions. Preston Murray has 15 receptions for 230 yards and 5 touchdowns, with 3 interceptions on the other side of the ball.

All-American defensive end Brian Bresee has 13 sacks. Timothy Ferguson has 4 interceptions. The Hornets outstanding linebacker corps is headlined by senior Aiden Beall, leading tackler Marcel Mami, and Malek Sabri, both juniors.

Connolly has thrown for 1,523 yards and 23 touchdowns, and rushed for 506 yards and 10 touchdowns. Noah Kuntz and Clay Wargo have combined for 1,300 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns. Anthony Smith is the ‘Canes biggest offensive threat, with 33 receptions for 805 yards and 13 touchdowns. Wargo leads the defense with 172 tackles. Powell leads the ‘Canes in sacks, with 11.5, while Jack Rosnage adds 9 sacks.

Linganore Coach Rick Conner has won three state titles (‘03, ‘09, ‘17), and finished as runner-up four times (‘02, ‘08, ‘13, and ‘18). Huntingtown Coach Paul Friel led Thomas Stone to a state semifinal in ‘14, and returned to the semifinal round with the ‘Canes last season, before losing to eventual state champion Franklin, 21-10, in the 3A semifinals.

1A State Semifinal

#15 Fort Hill (11-1) v #26 Catoctin (11-1)

Fort Hill - Todd Appel 12th season 142-14, 35-6 p/o
Catoctin - Doug Williams 29th season 159-138, 12-7 p/o

Fort Hill O: 49.8 D: 15.8 PD: 34.0
Catoctin O: 45.3 D: 16.3 PD: 29.0

The Fort Hill Sentinels are looking to advance to their seventh straight 1A state title game and capture their sixth state championship in seven years. Catoctin won its first post-season game since winning the state title in 2009, with its 53-6 opening round win over Southern of Garrett.

The Sentinels rank second in scoring in the MPSSAA, averaging 49.8 points per game, while the Cougars rank fifth, putting up 45.4 points per clip.

The Sentinels have won 10 of their 11 victories by 24 points or more, save for their 35-21 win over Brunswick in the opening round of the playoffs. Since, the 7-time state champs poured it on Williamsport, 64-22, then captured their 700th win in its program history with their 55-14 rout of Randallstown.

The Cougars have scored 31 or more points in all 11 games played (1 forfeit win), and scored 41 points or more in 10 of 11 games, including all three playoff games. Of their 10 wins on the field, the Cougars have won all ten by 17 points or more. In Friday night’s win, Carson Sickeri rushed for 281 yards and 6 touchdowns in the 41-21 win over Fairmont Heights.

Fort Hill and Catoctin have played four common opponents - Mountain Ridge, Southern of Garrett, Brunswick, and Williamsport. The Sentinels beat Mountain Ridge by 49 (56-7), while the Cougars downed the Miners by 43 (43-0). Fort Hill shut out Southern (55-0), while the Cougars have a pair of wins over the Rams, including a 47 point (53-6) win in the opening round.

Both teams found their toughest wins against Brunswick, as the Sentinels had their closest margin of victory versus the Railroaders in the opening round, 35-21, and the Cougars found themselves tied with Brunswick at 21 after three quarters in their regular season meeting, before scoring 21 fourth quarter points and winning 49-28. The Sentinels routed Williamsport by 42 (64-22) in the second round, while the Cougars beat the Wildcats by 43 (43-0).

The Sentinels powerful running game is led by 5’11 210 senior Carson Snyder and sophomore Brevin Stubbs, with the former rushing for 1,327 yards and 25 touchdowns, and the latter rushing for 1,001 yards and 16 touchdowns, at 13 yards per carry. Snyder is also the Sentinels leading tackler (104, 45 solo), and Stubbs is also their leading receiver (5 tds), returned three punts for scores, scored 25 touchdowns in all, and grabbed three interceptions.

All-American kicker Danny King (WVU commit) is also the quarterback for the Cumberland powerhouse that has amassed 4,259 yards, averaging 8.7 yards per carry. Though King has thrown the ball just 28 times, he’s completed 18 passes, 7 for touchdowns. King, who averages 41.7 yards per punt, has hit on all of his 65 extra point attempts this season. Korey Stafford leads Fort Hill in interceptions, with 6, while Santan Plummer leads the defending champs in sacks, with 7.

The Cougars junior Sickeri ranks third in the MPSSAA in rushing yards, with 1,910 yards, rushing for 32 touchdowns and scoring 37 touchdowns in all. Ryan Orr has thrown 91-154 for 1,722 yards and 16 touchdowns, with 7 interceptions. Travis Fields, who is tied for the team lead in interceptions, with 4, has 37 receptions for 817 yards and 9 touchdowns. Jake Baker, the Cougars second leading rusher, has 12 tackles for loss and 7 sacks.

Sentinels coach Todd Appel has the highest winning percentage (.910) in MPSSAA history, with a record of 142-14, and ranks second all-time in MPSSAA history in playoff wins, with 35. Cougars coach Doug Williams is the longest tenured coach in the final 16, with 29 years at the helm for the Cougars, winning a 1A state title in 2009.

4A
Northwest 22 Quince Orchard 13 >>> #1 QO goes down in the Cougar Dome, as the Northwest Jags snap the Cougs’ six game winning streak in the series. Cougars Marquez Cooper was held to under 100 yards rushing, and their offense that averaged 53.3 points per game, managed just 1 score (the other score was a k/r TD).

Wise 44 Old Mill 0 >>> Mismatch.

3A
Linganore 27 Mervo 25 >>> Lancers hold off the Mustangs in a thriller.

Damascus 21 Huntingtown 14 >>> Swarmin’ Hornets hold the ‘Canes scoreless in the second half.

2A
Middletown 31 Elkton 27 >>> Reese Poffenberger caps off a final minute game-winning drive with a 15 yard score in a wild one.

Potomac 16 New Town 6 >>> Wolverines keep the Titans out of the end zone, allowing only a pair of field goals. Dominique Anthony runs for two scores.

1A
Catoctin 41 Fort Hill 0 >>> Shocker! Not that the Cougars won, it’s that they won 41-0 and completely dominated the 7-time champs. Carson Sickeri is special.
