Among the eight coaches that will be on the sidelines in the state finals, five rank among the top 20 all-time in MPSSAA history in post-season wins, including Dunbar’s Coach Smith (#1), Wise’s Coach Parrish (#4t), Linganore’s Coach Conner (#6t), Damascus’ Coach Eric Wallich (#11t), and Northwest’s Coach Neubeiser (#18t). Another, Catoctin’s Doug Williams ranks among the top 40, with 13 playoff wins.

Friday night, Smith became the first to 40 wins, and Parrish became just one of five coaches to win 30 playoff games in MPSSAA history. Conner needs one victory to grow the ‘Club 30’ number to six. Wallich would become the 11th coach in MPSSAA history with 24 post-season wins, with a win.

The ‘30 Club’ looks to double what it was coming into the season over the next two years no matter the outcomes of this weekend’s games. With Parrish in, and Conner at the doorstep, it’s seemingly possible, especially with this playoff expansion, that Franklin’s Coach Anthony Burgos, Wallich, Douglass’ Coach JC Pinkney and River Hill’s Coach Brian Van Deusen makes it ten with 30, should all coach the next two years.

Of the twenty coaches that have won at least 18 post-season games, ten are active.

Six of the eight coaches leading their respective teams this weekend come in already having won a state title, including five that have won two or more. Dunbar’s Coach Lawrence Smith could become the fourth coach in MPSSAA history to win seven state titles, should the Poets win their 13th straight game this season. Wise’s Coach DaLawn Parrish would become the eighth coach in MPSSAA history to win five state titles, should the Pumas come out victorious over the Jaguars. Either Damascus Coach Eric Wallich or Linganore Coach Rick Conner will become the 12th coach in MPSSAA history to win at least four state titles. Northwest Coach Mike Neubeiser can become the 23rd coach in MPSSAA history to win three states with a win.

Smith and Conner will both be making their eighth state championship game appearance, respectively, joining MoCo legends Bob Milloy (11) and Al Thomas (12), and Frederick County Hall of Famer Dave Carruthers (8) as the only coaches in MPSSAA history to do so. Parrish becomes the 11th coach in MPSSAA history to coach in seven title games. Neubeiser will become the 22nd coach in MPSSAA history to coach in four championship games.

Parrish is just one of two coaches to have won four 4A (former AA) state titles, joining Milloy. Parrish also becomes the third Coach in MPSSAA history to coach in seven 4A state title games, joining Milloy and Churchill’s Fred Sheppard (7).

All eight have won at least one state title, winning a total of 39 state titles, collectively. Both Damascus and Dunbar have a chance to win their 11th state titles, and one away from Seneca Valley’s state record of 12. Damascus is making a state record 15th appearance in a state title game, while Dunbar and Linganore join both the Swarmin’ Hornets and Fort Hill (14) as the only teams to earn at least 13 berths in a title game.

The Potomac Wolverines feature a quarterback and receiver who have moved in among the top 10 in MPSSAA history in career passing yards, career passing touchdowns, career receiving yards, career receiving touchdowns, as well as the top 10 lists in single-season passing touchdowns, single-season receiving touchdowns, and single-season receiving yards, respectively.

Dominique Anthony, the Wolverines 6’1 219 quarterback committed to Old Dominion, has thrown for 72 touchdowns in his career, ranking 5th all-time in MPSSAA history, and 2nd all-time in PG County history, trailing only Friendly’s Joe Haden (80). With 6,628 career passing yards, Anthony ranks 7th all-time in MPSSAA history in hat category. Anthony’s 38 passing touchdowns this season ranks tied for 7th all-time, and is two away from being tied for 5th all-time. Additionally, Anthony needs 180 passing yards to rank among the top 10 all-time in single-season passing yards.

Catoctin vs Dunbar - Catoctin's 41-0 blowout of Fort Hill can't be overlooked, nor can Dunbar's narrow 42-38 win over Lake Clifton in Playoff Week #2. Catoctin in a close one.

 

MIddletown vs Potomac - A virtual toss-up. Middletown's incredible comeback against Elkton could give them the edge going into this game.

 

Damascus vs Linganore - Two of the premiere programs in Maryland lock horns. Having Mr. Bresee on their team may be the difference maker for the Hornets.

 

Wise vs Northwest - If any of the games are one-sided, this should be the one.

Congrats to my guy, DaLawn, and his Pumas, on their 4th 4A state title in 5 years, and their 5th in 8 years. He always has his talented units so prepared. Very proud of him. The Pumas produced close to 500 yards of offense, and held the Jaguars scoreless in the second half.

Congratulations to Parkville Head Coach Justin Payne on being selected as the Baltimore Ravens 2019 Coach of the Year. The Knights finished 11-1, and made the 4A state quarterfinals, following a 3-6 season. A great honor for my long-time (41 years) friend.
