(#11) Dillon Tate, RHP

Ceiling: 45         Risk: High       ETA: 2019       Role Description: Swingman
Ht/Wt: 6’2” / 195 lbs.          B/T: R/R         Highest Level: AA               Age (as of April 1, 2019): 24y, 11m
Video | Report

Tate was the main prospect return in the deal that sent Zach Britton to the Yankees. He has developed better control and pitchability since going fourth overall in the 2015 draft, though a fastball that once hovered in the high-90s has lost a few ticks. As a starter, Tate’s heater hovers in the low-90s and scrapes 94-to-95 mph at best. Both a slider and changeup are usable offerings, though neither grades as a true plus. Tate throws strikes with his fastball with more control than true command, meaning he’s vulnerable to hard contact when the pitch catches too much plate. We see him as a swingman option long-term, though it’s interesting to think about the stuff he showed in college coming back in a bullpen role.

AA: 0-2, 10.80 ERA, 6.2 IP, 6 K, 3 BB, 2.10 WHIP

Might be time to transition him to the bullpen once Dean Kremer is ready to pitch.

Sent to Frederick...doesn’t seem like that is because of rehab.

Never mind...Roch responded to me and it’s rehab.

2 IP, zeroes across the board except a few Ks.

Has given up 1 run in his last 5 outings, spanning 8 innings.

Saw this on twitter:

#Orioles prospect Dillon Tate, acquired in the Zach Britton trade has excelled since being moved to the Bowie bullpen. Over his last 20.2 innings he has a 1.74 ERA while striking out 23 and walking only 3.

We have all thought he could be a force as a reliever.  Adding him and Hunter to the pen could give the team 2 guys capable of going multiple innings and bring in high end performance.

Its going to be interesting to see those 2 develop.  There is some real potential there.

Tate and Harvey in high leverage BP roles may not be what the organization or fan base wanted, but there is real value there.

Harvey could go old school, and perform well in the pen, then work his way back to a rotation.

I've got much more confidence and interest in Harvey than I do in Tate.

Certainly possible he ends up contributing, relievers can be found anywhere, but I'm not even lightly penciling him in to a future bullpen.  Especially not thinking about him as a late-inning asset.  If he sustains this a little bit and pitches great now through August, then I'd think about bringing him up and seeing if he can translate the success up here.

When we acquired him, most scouts said he was a BP arm.  Most of those scouts seemed to think he could be an asset out there.

I think people fall into a trap that a player struggling in one role means he is no longer someone to look out for.  The history of the game is littered with relievers who were garbage starters and turned out to be great.  Tate may not end up being great but anything he did as a starter is completely irrelevant to this role.

Who tweeted that? Sounds like someone I should be following! (Maybe I already do and just missed it.)

I knew he’s been good, didn’t realize it was that good.

I don’t remember who it was. It wasn’t someone I had heard of.
