I have said a few times this guy breaks the mold of most of his NPB counter parts. It is not a given that he is top of the shelf, but in a market where you can get him for 6 years and 50-75 million dollars you take the risk.

At worst he is a number 2 or 3 type pitcher, but the kid is a workout machine and takes conditioning very seriously. Maybe this means that 97 mph fastball in NPB could be 94-95 on a five day throwing. The young man has 4 quality pitches that could be staples in the majors.

If he goes to a pitcher friendly park, he could be an anchor to a staff. If he somehow lands in New York, he could be the better second fiddle in the league.

Sure there is and always will be risk and completely understand if teams want to stay away, but he does make sense for certain organizations that can absorb his risk. If you can write off his contract and live with any performance, his potential reward is higher than what is left on the current free agent market.
