Rutgers Athletics: Rutgers-Maryland Doubleheader Moved to High Point Solutions Stadium

The Rutgers doubleheader scheduled for Nov. 4 versus Maryland at Yankee Stadium has been moved to High Point Solutions Stadium. The joint decision between Rutgers and the Yankees was necessary in order to allow a sufficient amount of time to logistically stage the events in Piscataway due to the Yankees' current postseason run.

A little odd since the latest Yankees home World Series game would be October 29th, but I guess they're considering the potential victory parade taking place on the 4th.

One day after the Yankees cancel a football game because they think they'll be too busy celebrating to host it, they get bounced out of the playoffs. Oh how I love karma!

InsideMDSports: What's The Real Reason Rutgers Canceled on Yankee Stadium?

By moving the game from Yankee Stadium, Rutgers gets its full $750,000 rental fee back from the Yankees, per NJ.com. That might sound like a relatively small amount for a Big Ten football program, but it's big money when you consider the state of the Scarlet Knights athletic program. It had to borrow $6.1 million from the university to help ease a $39 million shortfall -- in part because of money owed to fired football coach Kyle Flood, fired basketball coach Eddie Jordan and fired A.D. Julie Hermann -- in 2016, and the school's president is gradually withdrawing all university subsidies for athletics.

Needed to win yesterday, and found a way.

Need to win this game vs. Rutgers as well.   Not only gives you that 5th win (minimum they needed to accomplish this year); but also gives you another head-to-head Big Ten East win... and some separation from Rutgers and Indiana.

Beat Rutgers, and you are 5-4 overall, 3-3 in the Big Ten with Michigan, @Michigan State, Penn State remaining.

Would be nice to ride a little 2 game streak into the game vs. the Wolverines, with a chance to vault into 4th in the division.

Bunch of cheapskates. Beat 'em up and take their lunch money.

In all seriousness, that was a jerk move on the school's part to move the just two weeks before over $750,000. I imagine there were people who booked hotels in NYC that weekend just for the game. I'd be pissed if I were one of them.

Maryland opens as a 2-point favorite in this game.

The Scarlet Knights currently sit at 3-5 (2-2 Big Ten). Their wins have come over Morgan State, Illinois, and Purdue. Losses have come to Washington, Eastern Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, and Michigan. Their only blowout loss has come to the Buckeyes, with the rest being fairly close games. Their defense has done enough to keep them in most games, but the offense hasn't been able to take advantage in their losses.

Offensively, Rutgers has one of the worst passing offenses in the country (#122), and the worst in the conference. Their rushing offense has been alright (#77 in the country). They've been bad at converting third-downs, but have been alright in the red zone. One thing they've done very well is protect their quarterback, as they've allowed very few sacks on the year. As a whole, they have the 4th-worst offensive unit in the nation, with only UTEP, Kent State, and Wyoming having worse offenses.

Defensively, their pass defense has been alright (#60 in the country), and their run defense has been a little worse (#84 in the country). They have the 6th-worst pass rush in the nation. Their third-down defense has been one of the best in the country, but they've been one of the worst in the red zone. As a whole, they have the #69 ranked defense in the nation, making this a truly average unit.

No changes to this week's depth chart.

Brandon Gaudin, Glen Mason, and Elise Menaker will be on the call for BTN.

Nice to see Bortenschlager and Taivon gaining chemistry. Taivon has had a touchdown in three straight games, and I hope it continues this week. The path to six wins is pretty daunting, but Maryland has done all they can so far. That loss to UCF doesn't look so bad now, with them being 7-0. Bummer this game isn't at Yankee Stadium anymore, but as long as they win I don't care where it's played...
