Never heard of it before seeing this thread
It's pretty popular... started the thread because I saw someone on LinkedIn saying, "eSports should be looked at for what it is... a sport."
That seems a bit much to me .
Another guy that some here will know - Pete Volk, used to cover MD for Testudo Times - covers eSports for SB Nation...

It's a world I know nothing about.

So my wife and I get our kids a gift if they get straight A's on their report cards.. Tonight, my son decided he wanted a Houston Outlaws jersey. From the Overwatch league.
$65. No idea if this has any staying power, but it seems popular so far.

Yeah back then when you had two buttons to press. Now there's 30 and it takes about 6 months to learn how to play any modern game.
I get they're good at what they do, but no thank you.

The Ringer: How an ‘Overwatch’ Update Derailed One of the Most Dominant Teams in Esports
I read the headline to Drew, my 13 year old, and he said, "yea, it's true" totally ruined their season.
No idea what he's talking about, but he says this story is spot on.

I never understood the fascination of watching others play video games. I guess I'm old. Young kids are probably like, "why do you watch people play real games?" Because it takes physical skills and the human is inside the game. Not digital characters milling about controlled by a human outside the game. But that's beside the point.
As much as I love football, I never watched those Madden tournaments ESPN or whatever station used to air. I just can't watch video games. I'll gladly play though.
Anyway, a lot of Universities already have eSports varsity teams, meaning many more will soon. That means it will fall under the control of an athletic director just like football, basketball, field hockey, etc... That being the case, eSports isn't going anywhere.
