Can't we just go back to our normal Oscar complaints, like how goddamn long it was?

That's not why people watch. Say thank you and walk off the stage. Everyone just has to take themselves so seriously.
It's not why people watch, but it's also not that big of a deal IMO.
I do think lots of people watched to see what Chris Rock would say, though.

Yeah, I wasn't home for the show last night, but I made a point of finding Rock's opening monologue online this morning.

It's a perfect soapbox to bring attention to a cause you feel strongly about. It will (and perhaps should) rub some people the wrong way if they are on the other side of a particular issue, or if they just don't care, but it's absolutely a strong venue for getting a message out. Perhaps the strongest there is anywhere given the potential audience.
I mean, what if instead of global warming he was talking about cancer research or something. It's the same thing, just a different major issue. Now of course nobody is against cancer research, so you'll get some brushback from those who think global warming (at least as a human-caused and correctable issue) is not a topic worthy of support, but I think it's absolutely the right venue for trying to raise awareness about any issue. Kind of like Kurt Warner or Ray Lewis screaming about Jesus after winning a Super Bowl. Ok, not everybody's cup of tea, but you'll never have a bigger stage to try and get your point out, especially to people who don't already agree with you.

In this country. Yes. What's so hard to understand about that?
Do you want to group Italians and Mexicans and Portugeese together as one race too?
When people stop painting with broad brushes and grouping people by color, that would be a good first step towards solving a diversity problem. People need to be educated that there is more than white, brown, black, yellow.
Years ago, Irish immigrants could not get a job in this country because they were Irish. Not "white". Irish. They have a storied history in the fire department because it's the only job they would let them have 100+ years ago. Run into burning buildings because if peasant immigrants died running into a fire with not nearly anything close to the safety equipment we have today, who cares right?
Or just like in Gangs of New York. The Irish get off the boat they came on, walk down the dock, and get on another boat to fight and die in the America's Civil War. But since they're all "white", that doesnt count as oppression I guess. No racial injustice there, right?
Idris Elba is African-English. But if we want to just call everyone like him "black", or assume all blacks are African-American... I don't know it's just ignorant as hell.
I've said my peace and i'm moving on.

I see nothing about the United States.
He would've been an amazing Bond. Probably too old now.
I don't think any person of modern sensibilities would mind more leading black roles, but it is ignorant to ignore the progress made in recent years and to pretend that we're not on the right track. That being said, Rock's criticism of writers rooms likely is far more valid.
Another criticism is the execs. I saw how Don Cheadle has been trying to make this Miles Davis film for over 5 yrs. He had to get it written to have a white co-star for them to fund it.

I thought Elba as Bond was happening. I'm not a big Bond fan so I don't follow it closely and I guess I was mistaken. Oh well.
But as I said before, the issue isn't as much who the Academy nominates, it's more the opportunities, or lack there of for minorities to have major parts. And sorry, a white British person doesn't count.
As far as I know they have made no plans for who the next Bond is. Elba is just on the short list ppl are talking about.
That's not why people watch. Say thank you and walk off the stage. Everyone just has to take themselves so seriously.
But the show was not for you. It was for the nominated and the winners.

Hopefully all you Stringer/Elba fans have watched his best work, Luther. Amazing stuff. It's on Netflix.
Watched season 1. Started off slow but took off. Need to get started on season 2.

I think this character ends him as Bond. I don't see them wanting him to play 2 different spies.

You are saying that a white European is a minority. How is it they are a minority? It makes no sense for a group that had no nation as its home.

I don't know about that. He plays an American in that movie. Craig played similar type roles before and during Bond.
If they could get Nolan to direct, now that would be amazing.

I don't recall Craig as a spy before.

Munich maybe? Before Casino Royale, but this Idris Elba movie would also be before whatever next Bond flick he would hypothetically be in.

Nolan is busy with Dunkirk.
Which films this year. The earliest we'd see a Bond movie is likely 2018 so he could take over after Dunkirk.

You don't make any sense. I've made my point pretty clear...even if its not popular. For everyone's sake, I'm not continuing down this road.
