It makes a great deal of sense.  You are assuming the Oscars are about the US film industry.  By and large that is the defacto case but the academy is not there to cater to the US.  It is an international org.  So really minorities when it comes to them are marginalized ppl. white British men and women are not marginalized.

You are saying that a white European is a minority.  How is it they are a minority?  It makes no sense for a group that had no nation as its home.

You're confusing nationality with race and other things... the more time goes on, the more the world gets smaller, the less nationality matters... (except to each nation's extreme right-wingers, but that's a different issue)...

This has nothing to do with anything, but Daniel Craig was shopping at the Whole Foods in Harbor East when he got the call saying he was the new James Bond.

Just so relentless all night about everything wrong with the world, that no one is going to do anything about except try to make you feel guilty as fuck.

Best Director was won by a Mexican.

Best Supporting Actor, British.

Best Supporitng Actress, Swedish

Best Musical Score, Italian

Best Original Song, Gay

Best Editing, South African Woman

Costume Design, British Woman

Animated Short, Chilean

Documentary Short, Pakistani Women

Live action short, Irish

The President of the Academy that runs this whole thing, black woman.

But hey. We need more diversity, right?

I am going at this statement.  Nationality is being put up as a minority.

Must've been working on that flop, The Invasion, at the time.

Oh, I see...

It can get confused because diversity just means having lots of different kinds of folks (rather than just white guys)... not only are there different flavors of "different kinds of folks", but the basis for discriminating has kinda changed fairly recently... for a long time, it was about nationality... in terms of people who came here, the Germans, Irish, Italians, Poles, etc., each had their own era of being looked at the way some folks look at Mexicans now... but those nationalities don't matter anymore as a basis for discrimination... if you're white, it doesn't matter where you came from to get here, you're just a white European... even if you're from South Africa or someplace else, you're still in the same category...

We also have yellow people, but nobody cares anymore if they're Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or whatever... they're all just Asians.   For Iranians, it's a big deal that they're not Arabs, they're Persians... but to us, folks from that part of the world are just Middle Easterners, and people from one country over there are unlikely to be treated differently than folks from a different nearby country... so, all in all, the scorecard for discrimination has been getting simplified... instead of having a long list of nationalities, now it's a much shorter list of skin-color-and-facial-features...

About the only time you hear racism confused with nationality these days is re: Mexicans... lots of folks who are down on Mexicans and want them gone really are racists... they'd be fine with Mexicans who are upper crust and lily white... but poorer folks who are more brown-ish,. well, that's a horse of a different color...

Of course, the great mysterious riddle America faces is the special kind of ceiling African-Americans run into... they run into walls when non-American Africans don't... and often nobody who's not black even realizes it happens until somebody makes a big stink about it...  but that's our own special USA-kind of slavery-derived racism.... it's America's "original sin" and it's our fate to find it woven through all manner of things without anybody trying to keep it going... and it manages to show up somehow in damn near everything... sometimes in big ways, sometimes in little ways, but it's often there somewhere...

Apparently Sacha Baron Cohen had his wife, Isla Fisher, smuggle his Ali G outfit in her purse. The Academy was pissed and might ban him for life. Just makes me love it even more.

I thought it was very funny.  They should be happy about a funny segment.  Look at the guy.  He is an ambush comedian.  What do they expect?
