MASN: Dan Duquette: "Everybody knows we're trying to sign Chris Davis"

http://www.masnsport...hris-davis.html

I like Duquette stating, "At some point we have to move forward. Either you can get a deal or you can't get a deal," Duquette said when asked specifically about Davis and O'Day "I'm not sure we're there yet, but the day of reckoning is going to come soon for the team and it's going to come for these players, too. They have to decide where they're going to work for the next couple of years of their career."

I don't like Duquette stating, "I just know that the price of poker is getting expensive - particularly some of these pitchers they've signed. Some of these contracts are just staggering. The contract (David Price) signed in Boston, it's just a staggering amount."

Agreed that you reach a time where you can either reach a deal, or you can not.

I had no expectations of the O's bidding on Price, or Grienke, or Cueto, or Zimmermann... but Price's contract wasn't that much above expectations of most. Shouldn't be surprising.

I don't know, I'll go with "staggering" myself with respect to the David Price contract. That said, it does seem like every year that Duquette underestimates the Free Agent market ...... significantly so.

The spin/lip service begins.

They're serious about signing Davis. My Irish ass.

Why even comment on the big contracts? Does he think it's going to invoke any amount of empathy? This is the fucking big leagues. Shut up. It's not remotely surprising anymore so just stop commenting on it and execute your plan (if there is one.) Man it really sucks being an O's fan. I'm glad I enjoyed the hell out of these past 4 seasons. It was very clearly a fluke. A fluke we deserved.

I thought Price was always getting 200+ million.

It's a ton of $, all I meant was that it was a projected amount of $....  MLBTR projected 7 years $217M to the Cubs... pretty good call.

Even if you didn't, what's the point? Other than intending to come across clueless. This is why I really don't obsessively follow the off season like I do the season. It's obnoxiously stupid and annoying every freaking year.

Based on comments I see in other places, I think it's very easy for us to underestimate the number of people just gobsmacked by these deals, even among big baseball fans. So while we don't buy it, others very well may.

DD is shocked by these big money deals because he has spending time away from the game to write his memoirs.

The best job Duquette has done is convincing people that he is a really good GM.

He deserves an Oscar for that one.

What did he think the top FAs and TOR starters were going to cost?

He publicly said he could get those things and now he is acting surprised? Wtf?

Do they just have no clue as to where the market is going?

This sounds like a brace yourself, we tried and couldn't get it done interview. He wil try to save face, certain fans will buy into his bullshit and we will have to hope that a collection of players that are really no better than a 500 team can get lucky.

No matter what he says, short of announcing a signing, you're gonna belittle it... but that doesn't mean he's supposed to impose a media blackout until thing's are resolved...

Look at it this way:  Every time he says something, you get to comment on how clueless he is.  Is that a positive or a negative?   ;-)

I guess I've just been beat down by all of this so much that it doesn't even envoke reaction from me anymore. We're just not going to spend a certain amount on any one player under PA. Whoever said Manny is absolutely gone in a few years is spot on. He knows the amount he'll get on the open market and there is no way PA is even coming close to that number. And I have to give DD a pass in this instance. We all know if he was in TOR or another city with an owner willing to hand out big contracts that he would do it. He's just towing the company line here.

I don't care about not giving out top contracts. Stated surprise at contracts that were projected is odd.

There are things to question about Duquette, but he has strengths as well. I continue to think he is competent, and for over a decade the Os didn't have that.

Also impossible to evaluate Duquette fully without mentioning his boss...where I ding him is for some of the decision making that is within his direct control... ie decisions made within the constraints of his boss and this job in particular.
