Brian Roberts co hosted "Inside Pitch" yesterday on MLB Radio and told a few great Griffey stories, I'll make it short:

 

When he and Tim Raines Jr were at the O's minor league facility (remember, it wasn't the same as the Major League, it was 2.5 hours away at the time), the Reds were there one day and Raines was going to walk over to say hi to Griffey, so B rob tagged along. Griffey asked them what size they were, and a few days later sent over a ton of gear for Roberts and Raines. Brian said he always did that for young players when he got to "veteran status" so to speak. 

 

The second story was after his 2005 elbow injury he went to Cincy to have Dr Kremchek do his surgery..Griffey was actually checking out after hamstring surgery as B Rob was coming in. After Roberts' surgery the next day, Griffey called to check on him. Thought that was pretty cool. 

 

Always nice to put a human side to these guys.

My coolest memory of Griffey was going to an O's game in I believe 1993. 9 years old. Late in the game, 8th or 9th inning, bases were loaded with Griffey up to bat. I don't recall the pitcher but he threw a wild pitch, runners moved up, run scored. Very next pitch Griffey put one on Eutaw Street and pimped it like he did in "Little Big League". So I missed seeing my first live grand slam by a wild pitch.

 

I'm pretty sure the clip they have shown a lot while talking about him the last few days where he's in the teal jersey, and it's a day game clearly at Camden given the background...I'm pretty certain that was that home run.

 

Probably my favorite non-oriole as a kid. When baseball gloves had used to have a players signature in them I had a Griffey glove. 

 

I don't recall much personally about Piazza, being in the NL and all. But I remember his homer after 9/11. Even if he accomplished nothing else in his career, that moment will live forever.
