Not many newer bands are doing much for me.

Maybe I'm getting old and curmudgeony.

Holy shit I am turning into Shack.

I only listened to about 10 songs. I just listened to their catalog on shuffle on Spotify. I'll look into them a bit more. I mean, I love Radiohead, and some of their music would certainly put me to sleep on the way home from work too. I was just being an ass. ;)

Ok I'll make a serious list.

Beny More

CCR

Compay Segundo

The Ramones

Muddy Waters

Sorry for the Cuban music reminds me of my childhood and I still bump it on my iphone.

<p>I am pretty sure Shack is thinking of PBR.

I listened to the Arctic Monkeys while at work today.  They might be alright.

I can see why the Hold Steady has such a loyal following...the songwriting, storytelling is good. I just can't tolerate the lead dude's voice. However, I dig AM, and get the similar style of storytelling from their lyrics.

Several songs where he actually sings a bit are really damn good. But yeah I can see that being a polarizing factor. Still, on the way to the bar tonight I had time to listen to 2 songs of their's on shuffle... "Hornets! Hornets!" and "The First Night"... the perfect 2 song combination to showcase the variance in their range. They are seriously great. For a lot of reasons.

NMS, do me a favor and listen to "Constructive Summer". It's more of the singing variety than the sing-speak of their earlier stuff. If you genuinely tell me you dislike it I'll leave you alone.

Is a thread titled "The 5 best bands ever" really becoming a discussion about The Hold Steady? Really?

Well they're one of the five best. So why not?

I like them, but it's really weird for them to be a primary topic of a thread with this title.

He did until you made this about The Hold Steady   ;-)

BTW, can you just call them Hold Steady, or is leaving out "The" considered bad form among Holdsteadyites... I ask because it used to annoy me when people would say "The Cream"... it wasn't "The Cream", it was just "Cream"...  (I'm over it now, but when I was in high school it bothered me...)
