It's said that these draft is much weaker than last year's draft. If so, I would expect this year's crop of college pitchers to rank lower than last year's for the most part. Is that true?

With the caveat I'm much higher on Stroman than most and that Appel-Zimmer are all tightly packed together.

Thanks for the response. Very interesting to see all three (Gauzman, Appel, and Zimmer) ranked ahead of Hultzen and Bauer who I think went 2-3 in the draft last year.

I know I was higher on Jungmann and lower on Bauer than most media outlets.

I do think that this years draft is weaker in terms of top 10 and first round talent, but (with the exception of Cole) the college arms are comparable. Cole, Starling, Rendon and Bundy at the top made 2011 special. There is no single talent in that elite realm in 2012 in my opinion.

Interesting opinions on Gausman and Appel compared to Bauer and Hultzen. To be honest it's making me lean towards wanting one of them slightly more than Correa or Buxton who I've had higher on my want list to this point. I mean it is true that we need a front line caliber SP that can move fast in this organization other than Bundy.

To be clear, I disagree(d) with many national writers who saw Bauer and Hultzen as elite (top, top tier, ace ceiling/high floor) arms. I docked them both for control/command and thought their deception, which made college hitters look silly, wouldn't play up against ML hitters. I saw them as very safe bets (health permitting) to start in MLB (and reach that level quickly), but not particularly likely to settle in at the top of a rotation. In my opinion, some people may have been too focused on their eye-popping performances against college hitters and not focused enough on how the stuff would translate to MLB.

I like the total package that Gausman and Appel provide a bit better, but I'm sure there are plenty of evaluators and writers who would strongly disagree.

Re: the college pitchers vs. prep hitters, I've still not decided on Gausman vs. Correa. It would probably be a gun-to-my-head, gut call on draft day if I were BAL and both were available. I'd want a strong idea of signability to break the tie. Appel is a half step behind the two for me and I have some concerns about Buxton that make me think he would not be the best fit for the Orioles organization at 1:4.
