http://www.baltimore... ... 5471.story

First things first. When discussing his performance Wednesday night against the Blue Jays, Orioles right-hander Jason Hammel blamed himself and his inability to keep his fastball down against a fastball-feasting Toronto lineup.

“Balls were up in the zone, open roof tonight, ball was flying a little bit,” Hammel said after the Orioles’ 4-1 loss to Toronto at the Rogers Centre. “You put two and two together.”

In his next breath, Hammel proposed a theory well beyond basic math.

“They’re a very potent offense and if you don’t make your pitches down they’re going to get them out,” Hammel said. “They were taking some pretty big hacks on my breaking stuff too, which leads me to believe it was something else. It is what it is. I need to keep the ball down.”

Deserved its own thread. Very interesting.

The theories of Toronto using an eye in the stands to steal signs is nothing new. ESPN accused them last year and the Red Sox and Yankees have both made similar allegations.

http://espn.go.com/e... ... ers-centre

It's true that some of their guys have ridiculous splits:

Edwin Encarnacion (home ## away):
2011: .289/.353/.537/.889 14HR ## .255/.314/.366/.680 3HR
2012: .311/.400/.767/1.167 12HR ## .243/.278/.430/.708 5HR

Yunel Escobar
2011: .321/.416/.480/.896 8HR ## .261/.322/.349/.670 3HR
2012: .268/.308/.361/.669 1HR ## .234/.293/.290/.583 1HR

And as a team, particularly this year, they hit completely differently at home:

Rogers Center (15-10)
Opponents .233/.312/.400/.712 29HR 88BB 193K (953 PA)
Blue Jays .262/.332/.471/.803 42HR 81BB 183K (930 PA)

Away (12-14)
Opponents .250/.344/.428/.772 35HR 119BB 173K (1017 PA)
Blue Jays .231/.291/.369/.660 30HR 79BB 179K (1027 PA)

So, there is certainly some evidence and smoke around this issue. On the other hand, they have a number of guys with almost equal splits - Bautista, Arencibia, and Kelly Johnson all hit about the same home and road. Lawrie has been better at Rogers, but not ridiculously so.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories but I'm pretty suspicious on this one. I said as much in last night game thread. Something funny was going on there.

Sounds like they're being stupid and cheating too much.

Not that I'm recommending cheating of this kind. If they're doing it, then I think somebody oughta go to jail... and not the guy at the bottom either.

But if they wanted to be smart cheaters, they'd only do it when it really, really counts. That way, nobody would notice.

I believe they did it last year.

I also believe Hammel is making excuses for pitching like crap.

The thing that makes the most sense, to me, is that Hammel was/is tipping that particular pitch (breaking ball).... somehow. However, the alternatives have earned valid concern.
