I need to read up more on exactly what this means, but this seems like a pretty big deal on the surface.

If some sort of stipend is passed, I bet the next tier of schools (AAC/MWC in football, Big East/A10 in basketball) will follow suit.

For football, I'm not sure those conferences will be able to afford to do so, because their revenues are so small compared to the Big 5. Considering the only dissenting votes were reps of the CAA and Ivy League, I guess the members of the "other" five FBS schools must have felt the Big 5 were in fact prepared to make good on their threat to leave the NCAA.

As far as basketball I doubt the impact will be as profound, since fewer players means less overhead....plus the fact that revenues are more evenly divided among all D-1 schools (primarily because how March Madness money is distributed).

A Deadspin comment that I think fits well here:

NCAA to Players: It's not fair that the sports that make the most money should follow a different set of rules from all of the other athletes.

NCAA to Conferences: It's entirely fair that the conferences that make the most money should follow a different set of rules from all of the other conferences.
