My friends in Philly say he's said that during radio interviews a few times. I should have looked online for a link first though. That's my bad. On my phone now so I'll look later.

It seems like something an owner would say, "We want to put the most competitive team on the field possible." After all, there's no short-term gains to rebuilding from an attendance and to a lesser extent, a TV perspective. If the owner says this, "Hey, we're going to suck the rest of this year and probably next year, maybe even after that; oh and by the way, please still support our young players." That's not going to work, only the hardcores will still buy tickets in that situation.

I don't think you need to say anything. You just need to do the right things. Even a lot of casual fans can spot a sinking ship when they see one. My friend is in that casual fan camp, but he and his buddies still go to 7-10 games a year, and they are absolutely livid riht no that they didn't do anything to improve the outlook of their future. They have like 1 or 2 positional prospects in their farm, and nothing else at all. They are screwed.

Leonsis was pretty upfront with the Caps (and I believe the Wizards as well). You're right about not saying anything, you're still competing for business though. I'm not saying I agree with the Phillies strategy btw, I don't.

Well, Leonsis was also coming into those situations, and frankly would have instanty lost credibility had he said anything other than what he did. He was also fairly aggressive about quickly being competitive. And so far, it's worked in both cases. He needs to win a championship though. Which, both being DC teams, is kind of a cuel thing to say given that it'll likely never happen.

With the Caps weren't they just coming off a Stanley Cup and didn't they proceed to make the playoffs the next few years with Leonsis. With the Wizards it was in the Arenas/Crittendon guns aftermath.

Baby steps in both cases, neither team has made it above the second round, although for the Wizards just winning some games in the 2nd round was an achievement compared to the Caps who chronically underachieve.

No worries. I was just thinking that was the reason so I thought it was cool that you had actually heard it.

Apparently one issue TB had was because of so many ace level guys being available as FA in the offseason, they thought that they wouldn't have gotten a better return than what they got out of this trade.

Again though, why not take Oaklands deal?

Don't think this was linked on here...

ESPNTrade deadline winners and losers

Under winners

Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees: The Orioles and Blue Jays each have six games remaining against the Red Sox, while the Yankees have nine and now won't have to face Lester or Lackey in any of those games.

Nothing mentioned on Miller.
