UMTerps: Welcome to the XFINITY Center

http://www.umterps.c...TCLID=209601810

The University of Maryland athletics department announced today that the arena formerly known as the Comcast Center will be renamed the XFINITY Center, effective immediately. The renaming of the venue reflects the Xfinity brand’s strong awareness and resonance with consumers.

“We are excited to place the name Xfinity on this beloved University of Maryland sports venue,” said Tom Coughlin, senior vice president of Comcast’s Beltway region. “Our Xfinity brand represents our commitment to delivering an unparalleled, innovative entertainment experience to local consumers, and our partnership with the University of Maryland athletics department underscores this promise.”

It always take awhile for me to adjust to these. I was saying MCI Center forever. The ones that start out with real names -- not so generic like Mile High (yes I know the new stadium was always Invesco Field at Mile High now Sports Authority) -- I usually refer to them by their non-corporate name.

When do we see the first "I Still Call It Comcast" shirts?

The shorter the name, and the more similar to the old name, the easier it is to switch.

Verizon and MCI each have three syllables, so the transition is easier. Comcast has two, and Xfinity four, however, so I think most people will still call it Comcast.

Yuck!

Hopefully they charged Comcast a pretty penny to change the name though.

Comcast controls the naming rights, so while the university likely has some veto power (they aren't going to be able to name it Fuckin' Our Customers Center, even if that is closer to their core philosophy than "Xfinity") the company can probably do what it wants. They surely pay for all of the signage and other materials involved in changing the name, anyway.

To be fair, over the past few years the revenue-producing programs at the university have been delivering a similar commitment to an unparalleled, innovative entertainment experience.

Another lame attempt at re-branding for me to ignore....fancy new name ≠ better company.

That's sweet. Actually reminds me most of Bankers Life in Indiana.

How do the people on the ends see the game information?
