There are only two healthy bids: Almaty, Kazakhstan, and Beijing, China. One's an oil-rich state ruled by a president-for-life, and the other's, well, China. That's no coincidence. With the Sochi games raising the bar to an absurd $51 billion, hosting the Olympics no longer looks like a winning proposition. The failed and aborted 2022 candidacies all have one thing in common: When actual citizens are allowed to have a say, they say they don't want the Olympics.

NBC Washington: Finalists for 2022 Winter Olympics Announced

 

Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing, and Oslo made the list of finalists, as had been expected.

 

The cities must submit their detailed bid files to the IOC by next January. The host city will then be selected by the full IOC membership in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 31, 2015.

 

Even though Oslo — which hosted the 1952 Winter Games — made the final cut Monday, its candidacy remains uncertain. The Norwegian government has yet to back the project and won't make a decision until the autumn, probably in November. Polls have shown that more than half the population opposes the bid.

It really stinks living on this side of the planet sometimes.  Unless the winter games are in the US or Canada you're basically guaranteed to have to watch the live events at some obscene hour.

 

& would they really give the games to Beijing just 14 years after the hosted the summer ones?& Norway doesn't seem to want them it looks like....so we're headed to Kazakhstan?

They hosted the Olympics in 2008 so much of their infrastructure will be able to be used again without much refurbishing.

I kind of disagree, Feel like China will just re-build newer, sleeker buildings.

Well I guess they will need winter olympic venues...but they should at least be able to use the bird's nest stadium again.

Slate: Who Needs Snow? Beijing to Host 2022 Olympics.

 

While it can get pretty chilly, Beijing isn’t typically thought of as a winter sports wonderland. Three inches of snow is considered a record-breaking blizzard there. The plan is to hold the snow-based competitions in Zhangjiakou in Heibei province, about 120 miles north of the city. After subtropical Sochi, a lack of snow is clearly not a dealbreaker for the IOC.

 

I can't wait to see the Chinese ice hockey team. As the host country, no matter how pathetic they might be, they get an automatic bid, don't they?

 

Looked it up just for shits and giggles. The best their team has ever finished in an IIHF tournament is 15th....back in 1982. They are currently ranked #38. They have never participated in an Olympics.

The IOC is having itself quite a week. Boston dumps its bid to host the 2024 Summer Games, the waters around Rio resemble what Andy Dufresne crawled through to escape in The Shawshank Redemption....and now a city that gets almost no snow will host the Winter Games, simply by virtue of being the least ugly of two turds floating in the toilet.
