The amazing thing is that if she had just paid a couple people, it would have been a very good business move for her. $500 is worth a lot less than 50,000 Twitter followers. If she had just shown some foresight instead of going for the all-out scam, she might have become something truly big.
It makes me wonder whether it's possible to build yourself into a celebrity (or at least successful national persona) by doing what she did, only with actually paying out for it.

The really interesting stuff is coming out now. She appears to be some kind of front for this Prasad guy, possibly to the point of him actually writing most of her stuff.
Plus, the nature of their relationship is...unusual. They dated when she was in eighth grade and he a senior, and have been extremely close since. And he actually used a completely different picture to promote her as a writer, which she apparently may not have realized.
Oh, and they apparently scammed a bunch of people, including in some sense ESPN itself.
