Basically, the threshold for a positive marijuana test under NFL rules is 15 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml)*. The test is performed by splitting the urine sample into two bottles randomly labled "A" and "B". If "A" tests positive, "B" is tested simply for confirmation that the substance is contained in the sample (note, not for the amount).

 

*As is pointed out in a Bomani Jones tweet as an update to the article, this 15 ng/ml threshold is 1/10 the amount needed for a positive marijuana test through WADA.

 

Gordon's positive test came from being slightly above the limit in sample "A", but sample "B", while containing the substance, was under the limit. The article notes that if the bottles had been switched, there never would have been a positive test to begin with.

 

This whole thing comes off as another potential black eye for the league if Gordon can get the suspension overturned. Another black eye the league could easily have avoided.

It's an incredibly petty rule, they should fix it.

But when you're a repeat offender, maybe you should, you know, try not hanging out with people who smoke so that you don't fail a test that comes up as a fail for basically, you know, being around a smoker.

And being a multi-offender, as well as being pulled over recently with it in the car (in which he blamed it on the passenger), I'm just not buying the second hand smoke excuse at all. If anything, whatever he was using to mask it, just didn't purify his urine quite enough.
