There's one day a year - I always forget when it is (Easter?) - where all the kids in Baltimore basically take over the Inner Harbor, so it's probably best to avoid it then. Otherwise, it's about the safest place you can be in the city. I agree that Harborplace completely sucks, and could/should be a lot better.

Speaking as a tourist, I love the Inner Harbor and like the shops at Harborplace. I like looking at crab decor, looking for Os paraphernalia and gazing at the water. I had many pleasing meals at the Philips Buffet (I know you all shudder - but dammit, I loved it), and my wife loves the Cheesecake Factory no matter the location. The new Philips Crab Deck is cool. To me at least.
That said, on tips from good people on Oriole boards (Rshack among them), I've broadened my horizons to Fells Point (Thames Street) and Canton (Bo Brooks) and like those places better. More local, more authentic. Totally unlike home. Which is what I desire the most when wanting to experience Baltimore.

If we came down to Tennessee, and ate BBQ at an Arby's, what would you say?
THEY HAVE THE MEATS!

And to be fair, Phillips is probably more like going to Famous Dave's or the like.

Eh, people shouldn't go to Phillips when visiting Baltimore and they shouldn't go to Famous Dave's when visiting a place known for BBQ.

This would be like going to an Outback in Houston when the Terps make the Final 4 this year.
So what you're saying is that's your plan.

Wouldn't Longhorn Steakhouse or Texas Roadhouse be more appropriate?

They need Chaps at the harbor.
Aren't they set to open other locations? That would be good.
They ought to have a pit beef place of some kind. Even if they just open up a Boog's BBQ franchise.

I don't like the bridge... in all practical respects, it makes sense... but it's gonna have a negative psychological presence. serving as a boundary to the harbor... by closing the open part of the loop. it will make the harbor feel enclosed...
I hope they don't do it... better a free ferry, even if it costs more in the long run...
