College Game Day is a phenomenon. ESPN knows that. The fact that we have spent half this thread discussing it is an indication. They can show up on just about any campus and draw a huge crowd, even if the in-stadium crowds are less than full. And since ESPN obviously does some pre-coordination before selecting a site, UM would give them every assurance people will show. At the end of the day, all that will really matter is how big the Clemson game is relative to the other games scheduled that day.

Good post and in general I agree with you. The only thing I'd say to the contrary is they sometimes go outside of the norm like they did with North Dakota State and have before to go to a military academy, that game at Wrigley Field, HBCU battles, and Ivy League battle (seeing Lee Corso dressed Ben Franklin was hilarious). So I'd say this game could be the best game, but to be guaranteed to be on GameDay atleast one team will probably need to be in the national championship picture. And yeah like I said earlier, being in that 8 PM ABC slot would give it a big boost for this.

Only bad sites for GameDay are usually neutral site, off-campus stadiums, and west coast stadiums. While there is nothing wrong with broadcasting from the Red River Shootout as it typically is the biggest game of the day, it's the same when they broadcast INSIDE the stadium. West coast ones generally are bad because the fans aren't up. While I'm happy Colorado moved from the Big 12 to the Pac-12, I don't think the fans are as intense in the latter. So I think one thing in Maryland's favor despite my earlier criticism of some of the crowds particularly at the noon games, is that you are asking people to get up at 9 AM not 6 AM.

I want to see them in Hawaii.

Isn't Aloha Stadium off-campus? So between that and the 4 AM start, it would be interesting. I'm sure the Hawaii diehards would appear. If you see some of the earlier clips of the show, you'll notice they didn't have anywhere close to the hoopla they have today.

I don't recall the crowds at Oregon being that bad. They've made several appearances there, so that says something. It's small, anecdotal evidence, but I know a diehard Ducks fan who says he and a bunch of others leave Portland at 4am to get to Eugene when GameDay is in town.

That's a fair point, but I don't think it's a coincidence, they don't go to west coast games as frequently even proportionally compared to the rest of the country. You're also going to have your diehards regardless of the school, who will show-up at these types of things. That's one thing I've noticed in sports even the "lesser" teams have their fans who stand out. Oregon is also a power at this point. If it's between Maryland and say Washington State, all things being equal other than time difference, I'd say Maryland has the upper edge. I'd love them to get to Wazzu just to see how they handled the whole flag thing and if Wazzu fans would retire this tradition.

That would be interesting. I bet whenever Wazzou becomes relevant and they play a game that matters, GameDay would show up.

Yeah I'm thinking that as well or one of those weeks like North Dakota State where they don't really have any good games to show. Sort of a "filler" week and they can make a big deal about the flag.
