18 Maryland Terrapins

The bar graphs reflect the average rating given by the voters for each category.
Category averages are weighted by importance to generate overall score.

Why they're here: The Terps fared well in the coaching, recruiting, program power and stability departments -- registering at least a 7.6 in all four categories. However, Mark Turgeon's program took a hit in the current talent area, ranking dead last among the top 25 teams. But there should be enough talent on hand to make this season's NCAA tourney, and Turgeon and his staff have three top-100 players already in the fold for 2014. And they don't have a single senior on their roster this season. The Terps could be a major player a year from now. --Jeff Goodman

What could change: Turgeon has put together an excellent recruiting class for 2014, one that features Dion Wiley and Romelo Trimble, so it would appear that to this point the Terrapins' impending membership in the Big Ten counts as a plus (or perhaps is simply a nonfactor) to incoming recruits. If that should ever change, however, and recruits in the D.C. and Baltimore areas decide that even an expanded ACC that now stretches as far west as South Bend, Ind., is a more natural fit, this ranking for Maryland may turn out to have been optimistic. --John Gasaway

Name to know: Evan Smotrycz. Expect big things from the versatile 6-9 Michigan transfer. The word out of College Park, Md., is that he is as skilled a forward as there will be in the ACC this season. With two seasons of eligibility remaining, he could be an impact player for the Terps going forward. --Paul Biancardi
