While Im looking at some stats, in our podcast, Chris W alluded to Webb drawing the nickel assignment on Wes Welker. However, Peyton Manning posted a QB rating of 125.3 when looking Demaryius Thomas' way in 2012. When QBs go after Lardarius Webb, their QB rating drops all the way to 42.2. (Corey Graham 75.6, Jimmy Smith 85.5). All 3 of Denver's primary receivers are very successful. Also to be fair, Webb is excellent in the slot holding QBs to a rating of. 30.6. Corey Graham holds QBs to a 78.8 rating in the slot, and 75.6 overall, nearly identical no matter wher he lines up.
By this logic, wouldn't it be better off to neutralize Thomas with Webb rather than Welker? Since Graham will likely give you the same decent performance no matter who he is on? I feel like If you take Welker out with Webb, Thomas will have a bigger game on Graham and definitely Jimmy Smith. I know stats don't tell the whole story.
Chris, Dan, your thoughts?
