Last year after the Draft we discussed Wright and some of the other 2011 selections with Kevin Goldstein from Baseball Prospectus.
BSL: “The Orioles have stated they plan to use 3rd round selection Mike Wright as a Starter. Do you think any of the following picks – 4th rounder Kyle Simon (Arizona), 5th rounder Matthew Taylor, and 7th rounder Trent Howard (Central Michigan), 9th rounder Devin Jones (Mississippi State), 10th rounder Phillip Wilson (Virginia) – project favorably with Klein as relievers which could advance quickly?”
Goldstein: “Jones would be the most likely to be developed initially as a reliever. Well above-average velocity in short stints and a good slider.”

Hopefully this a MacPhail (and other regimes) thing and isn't an Angelos thing. MacPhail said to the media that he preferred not to dabble in that market; hopefully he was telling the truth and not taking the hit for an Angelos philosophy. What makes me leery is that the Orioles were weak in the international market well before MacPhail arrived; I find it hard to believe that every executive walked through the warehouse and said, "LET'S IGNORE THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET!!!" I do realize that the market down in the Dominican, Venezuela and other places is the Wild Wild West in the sense that you have to "play the game" to get a top talent, kind of like how in big-time college football, "if you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'." So it's hard for me to understand how teams operate, how long it takes for teams to gain a foothold down there, etc. Goldstein and Parks have mentioned on their podcast that if your favorite team landed a top talent, they probably broke rules to sign him. It's a tough subject to tackle, but I think everyone can agree one of Dan Duquette's top tasks is improving the team on an international level, especially in Latin America.*
*Hopefully goes over better than it did in Korea.

Season: 0-5, 5.87 era, 30.2 ip, 44 hits, 5 hr, 5 bb's, 22 k's
A College arm should be having better success than that at High A. You drafted him because you liked his arm. Move him to the bullpen, and see if he can start to dominate an inning or two at a time.
