Sports on Earth: Hope vs. Hype
http://www.sportsone...ticle/50239904/

Go to the article for the details, but here are the headlines:

Hope: LSU overcoming its absurd number of early departures.

Hype: Florida repeating its 2012 success with its win-ugly philosophy.

Hope: Kansas State staying relevant after losing Collin Klein.

Hype: Jadeveon Clowney winning the Heisman Trophy.

Hope: Miami finally making its first ACC title game appearance.

Hype: Louisville running through its weak schedule undefeated.

Hope: Baylor actually having a chance to win the Big 12 title.

Hype: Texas capitalizing on its talent for a 2013 resurgence.

Hope: Oregon State sticking around as a top-25 team.

Hype: Someone snapping the SEC's streak of seven straight national titles.

Beginning? I usually start get revved up as soon as spring practices end. Despite some flaws, I'll always be hooked on college football.

Living in Oregon, and regularly hearing about the Ducks probably does not hurt.... not exactly an abundance of talk about the Terps to help get people excited lol.

Not much else sports-wise to talk about out here during the summer, unless you're into MLS/Timbers, which I am not. So between the Ducks and Beavers, this time of year is all about waiting for college football to start.

I'm with you, college football is great. And like you said it definitely has it's flaws but there's not a better sports atmopshere IMO.

Interesting that Notre Dame is expected to go for more than Ohio State. Not a bad selection of games between these two and Nebraska, even if the others aren't so great (Central Michigan, Akron, Minnesota, and Indiana).

Can they do dynamic pricing for MD football? Good chance the ticket prices could go down in many cases.

With the Big Ten move, and thus more traditional, brand name programs with large fan bases coming to Byrd, I'd actually be very surprised if they don't.

I was speaking more in the short-term. Unless Maryland gets better, I think after an initial honeymoon, I'm not sure how much better attendance will be assuming Maryland is at the status quo. I personally think the expected attendance increase is overstated. Sure I expect, Penn States to invade because they are close. But are Nebraska fans going to come in 5-6 years, if it's an early November game when they are 6-3? As you mentioned they are brands and the every school has a substantial fanbase in the DC area, so they have that going for them. I just expect the novelty to wear off in 3-4 years after each team makes their initial visit here and things will comeback to what we've been seeing in recent times (again assuming Maryland isn't winning 9-10 games).

Speaking specifically of Nebraska fans, other than attending an Orange Bowl game when they were playing for a national title (where you'd expect them to travel well) I don't have any firsthand experience with them. But I have heard that they are among the most devoted in the sport, including when it comes to traveling....so I think you might be underestimating them just a bit. And you mentioned Washington, DC and the fact that it draws people from all over the country to live and work. But another thing it does is draw tourists, and so I think that will always be a draw for fans in Big Ten country to want to travel to UM games. And for the schools with the larger fan bases, you aren't always counting on the same people to come each time their school plays at MD.

As for Terps fans, yeah, if they aren't winning, then the novelty will wear off. But I still think that the athletic department could give variable pricing a try in 2014 (with OSU and WVU being prime games at Byrd). And like you said, there should also be lower prices than now for the FCS snoozers....although I would think it is already easy to get single-game tickets to those games for less than face value. Didn't they have a Groupon promo for an FCS game recently?

IIRC during their last years playing Colorado (over a holiday weekend) in Boulder, they were returning their ticket allotment, which is a lot closer than driving or flying half-way across the country. So no I don't think I'm underestimating them. They're a great fanbase, I just don't expect them single-handedly sellout Byrd on their name alone.

I do expect Ohio State and Michigan to draw well, regardless sort of like Florida State did (probably better ). And yes, you aren't depending on the same people with the large fanbases, but I think there's going to be much more people interested at the beginning. After that, if they have the choice between going to Maryland or other road games, I'm guessing they choose the latter assuming Maryland stays the status quo. The earlier in the year, the more likely they'll draw better attendance from these schools.

They had groupons for a few games, I think W&M + UConn, maybe some others.
