Cool! Who's blocking for the backs???? Edsall seems to be ignoring the O-line, which is usually not the way to win games.
Perception is reality.

Yeah, I didn't talk about it much, but losing Garcia was also hard to watch. I completely agree about football being won on the lines. I'll try and dig some more and see what lineman MD might be looking at.

So Kendall Fuller is a five-star defensive back from Good Counsel. He is ranked as the No. 4 overall recruit by Rivals recently. He was at Stefon Diggs' announcement at Looney's and listed Maryland as one of eight schools he's considering at the moment (the other schools are powerhouses -- everyone wants this kid). The thing about Fuller is that his brothers went to Virginia Tech, so some look at him as heading to Virginia Tech. But if anyone could get him away from VT and into Maryland's program, it's Mike Locksley. A month ago Fuller wouldn't have even been a realistic target for Maryland, but with Diggs' commitment, it opens up a few previously unopened doors. Guys like Fuller become realistic targets, and it helps that he's a Good Counsel guy and Maryland is in good there. He'll be committing next January during the Army All-American game.

Dorian O'Daniel is a four-star linebacker from GC and he'd be another great get for Maryland. He has a big-time offer list.

Re: Gilman. I don't know what the deal is between Maryland and Gilman is, but the two schools have had a pretty salty relationship over the years for whatever reason. Edsall's staff did a good job of getting an under-the-radar Gilman running back named Kenneth Goins into the fold for the 2012 recruiting class. Goins is the first Gilman guy Maryland's brought in for quite some time. I wouldn't be banking on any Gilman guys but Goins is a step in the right direction.

Another big time guy that Maryland loves is Adam Breneman, a five-star tight end from Pennsylvania. As you'd expect, he has a monster offer sheet but Breneman has shown interest in Maryland, taking an official visit here earlier this past month. He's a guy to keep an eye on. Maryland has Furstenburg here for only one more year, so Maryland can sell Breneman on the opportunity to start immediately.

The big thing for Maryland is that while they have Locksley, they need to show some improvement on the field. They can't have another 2-10 or 3-9 disaster season. Stefon Diggs took a huge leap of faith coming to Maryland in order to try to start something big here -- presumably an ACC title contender built around elite local talent. But Kendall Fuller isn't coming to Maryland if Maryland goes 2-10 or 3-9. They don't have to go 10-2, but I think they do have to 5-7 or 6-6 just to show that 2011 won't happen again. It'd also help if there wasn't another exodus of players leaving the program -- 23 guys leaving since Edsall showed up looks bad enough as it is. And you certainly don't want any rumors flying around about how Stefon Diggs and/or Wes Brown aren't thrilled with Edsall. That'd be a killer.

Another thing with recruiting: for the next couple of years, Maryland will be able to sell immediate playing time on big-time recruits. Maryland can tell five- and four-star recruits that they might get squashed in the depth chart at bigger football schools, while in College Park they'll get the *opportunity* to start right away, no questions asked. Stefon Diggs will be the no. 1 receiver and probably return punts and kicks, Wes Brown + Albert Reid will likely see plenty of the field, and Mike Madaras may be the starting left tackle sooner rather than later.

Kendall Fuller? Come be the no. 1 corner right away. Adam Breneman? Start at tight end from day one. Dorian O'Daniel? You might be redshirted at a big football school but you'll get the opportunity to start at linebacker here.

However, if you're selling this on recruits for three or four years in a row, it's probably not a good thing because that means you're still bad.........

Not that I take everything he says as gold or anything, but Vinny Cerrato made a good point the other day when discussing recruiting for the Terps. Cerrato does have a recruiting background back in the day. In any event, what he said made sense, which was that when a kid from the DMV goes down to a big SEC school in Florida or Alabama, if they are similar to other players on the depth chart, those schools tend to play the "local" product over the DMV kid.

He said Locksley has been preaching that to his recruits, the fact that at MD there is an opportunity to start. It makes sense that those SEC schools don't want to piss off local HS coaches by not playing their guys.

I think one thing that Maryland is fighting with elite local recruits is perception, and it doesn't necessarily have to do with Maryland's record. I think there's a perception for big-time local football players that Maryland is the cute school in their backyard that's nice and all, but just isn't as glamorous as the Floridas and Alabamas and Auburns. Elite local recruits know Maryland. They know what it has to offer. They know a lot of players and coaches in the program. They've been on campus a lot over the years for various reasons. They might have even rooted for Maryland growing up. There are no secrets with Maryland, and the grass is always greener on the other side. Florida, Alabama etc. offer vast amounts of prestige in a different locale than players are used to and they get to play in front of 100k fans in the best conference. I think Maryland could be 10-2 every year and they'd still fight this perception.

Also, re: local recruiting. Maryland has always done well in getting a large quantity of local talent; it's the elite local talent that they've had trouble with.

Is it childish of me to see all the Gilman recruits and get a sour look on my face, as a McDonogh grad?

I will be 100% honest here and I will catch a lot of flack for this (more than Joe Flacco) but I like Edsall. Why? The players he recruits respects him. He builds winners and honest programs. Is he a tough guy? Yes.

He already got Mike Parker to commit from Kettle Run and is really taking giant steps forward to land some very promising recruits. Everyone jumped on him after one poor season, but let him try to build this team in the next couple of seasons. Everyone says he took a 9-4 team and took them to the toilet but i disagree. The Terps lost two main cogs in their team in Torrey Smith and Da'rel Scott. There were no receivers that could possibly match what Smith meant to the team.

Should the Terps have won more games? Definitely. I just feel we should give him some time before jumping on him.

So, Rangoon got a big commitment on Friday. MD got Derwin Gray, who is rated the no. 1 offensive tackle in the state of Maryland and no. 6 overall OT in the nation. Listed at 6-foot-4, 291 pounds, Gray is rated as a four-star by Rivals: http://rivals.yahoo.... ... QuVJv8sZB4. Going to guess that Locks had a ton to do with this commitment...big first step for Locks in this recruiting class.

Apparently, Locks and Rangoon landed another four-star but I can't track down the name. Mike Farrell said on Twitter that he posted about the second guy on the Terrapin Times message board but I don't have access. Name not posted on the Rivals commitment list either. Searching for the name at the moment.

Good call.

I said Gray was the No. 1 OT prospect in Maryland -- that was wrong. He's the No. 1 overall prospect in DC.

I pride myself on living by a stringent ethical code, but when it comes to my sports teams, you can violate every rule in the book if it means bringing in top tier talent!

Go Locks!

They added two more players over the weekend as well:

Mike Williams, 3-star DE out of DC
DeAndre Lane, ATH out of Catonsville (Rivals doesn't have him ranked)

Big weekend for the Terps. Obviously they seem to have a great relationship beginning to grow with FCA. Kudos to Edsall and Locksley - now keep it up!
