4. Baltimore Orioles sign Kyle Lohse to three-year, $45 million dollar deal

The Orioles took a 93-loss team in 2011 and turned it into a 93-win team in 2012. However, for the Orioles to make it back to the playoffs they could really use a proven starter to slot at or near the front of their rotation.

Lohse, 34, has a 3.11 ERA in 399 1/3 innings over the last two seasons and would give the O's rotation some much-needed innings and reliability until top prospects Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman arrive. The AL East is wide open, and the Orioles can't sit around and let someone else take the division.

That sounds horrible.

If the O's are uncomfortable with Matusz/Britton/S. Johnson battling it out for the 5th, go sign some other veteran arm for a year. 3 years and that money to Lohse seems like a poor use of resources. (Without even discussing the lost draft pick.)

I'm quite comfortable with the above trio as the 5th starter, and Bundy pushing someone out by the end of May.

I agree with the last statement but not sure giving what I think would be a mediocre pitcher in the AL East 15 million a year is the way to go.

I find it hard to believe the Orioles would prefer to give Lohse three years at $15 million per over any other vet left on the market that would happily accept a 1/$6 or 2/$14

3 years, 15M a year and you lose a pick. Great idea!

Even when Bowden is making up deals, he screws the Orioles, the Red Sox get Upton, the Rangers Stanton, the Jays Soriano and we get Lohse and for 3 times what he is worth?

Make up better fairy tales Jim.

It's ideas like this that show us why Bowden doesn't have a GM job anymore.

That Marlins-Rangers trade makes a lot of sense, though I think Miami would need another prospect even in getting those three. I don't like the Gonzalez trade. I don't know enough about the prospects the Red Sox would give up to have an opinion on that trade. The Jays signing Soriano would be good, but maybe for $14 million over TWO years at best.

That Lohse deal makes me want to throw up. I'm sure Jim Bowden would be more than happy to pay a pitcher $15 million a season for his age 34-36 seasons when he has a career ERA+ of 97 and low strikeout rates, but that's why he has his current job and neither of his previous ones.

That deal would put the Marlins at under 34 million payroll for next season with only around 22 million actually going to players on their roster.

If I am the MLBPA I go ballistic.

...and Jeff Loria surfaces from swimming in his treasure vault, laughs maniacally, and orders the release of his hounds.

Possibly but if Selig continues to keep his eyes closed and act like nothing is rotten in Miami, nothing will happen.
