As well as another lefty.
More depth moves.
Schelereth has been good recently and been tough on lefties.
He is another guy that could be in the mix if Bmat and/or Patton are dealt.

Schlereth is the perfect NRI relief sign "@BertDbacks: #Orioles have signed Travis Ishikawa & Daniel Schlereth to minor league contracts."

I wouldn't hate having Matusz in the rotation with Schlereth & Patton in the 'pen. Schlereth can be the LOOGY, I think Patton shouldn't be pigeon-holed as such.

I agree with all of this...but these moves give us flexibility if we want to make a trade with one of these guys.I wouldn't hate having Matusz in the rotation with Schlereth & Patton in the 'pen. Schlereth can be the LOOGY, I think Patton shouldn't be pigeon-holed as such.

Out of the 2012 bullpen, only Strop had a BB/9 above 2 last year, and that was 5.
Adding Schlareth to the mix, with Strop, is a potential disaster. I know this is just a depth move, and he does have a high K/rate but this makes me nervous.

How could having both of these guys in the bullpen be a potential disaster?Schlareth's BB numbers are scary.

They would, at most, be 2 out of 7 guys in the bullpen, and one of them was a complete stud last year. You are dramatically overreacting to the potential "downside" of this move. If either guy doesn't pitch well, they won't pitch. Boom. Simple as that.

Potential disaster?? It is a depth move. A still young lefty who throws hard and strikes out hitters is worth taking a shot.Schlareth's BB numbers are scary.

That's why you pile up 439 bullpen arms. Keep the hot guys in the pen, cut anybody else loose. That was one of the keys to the success of 2012. There was always another guy to step in.

Per Rotoworld:
Brewers released LHP Zach Braddock.Braddock has a big arm, but he had problems with a sleep disorder last year and has also dealt with personal issues. Still, as a lefty that throws in the mid-90s, someone will be willing to take a chance on him. May 4 - 2:33 PM
Both Schlereth are lefties with good arms, in their mid 20's. Both are great signings as low risk pickups. Both are perfect guys to start at AAA and hopefully turn things around. Strictly depth, though. Both have had command issues in the majors and I don't believe either is ready to replace a Patton.
I like the Ishikawa signing also. A plus defender at 1B with a passable bat. The O's have an overflow at Norfolk.
1B Conor Jackson/Travis Ishikawa
2B Yamaico Navarro/Ryan Flaherty
SS Schoop?/Navarro?
3B Valencia/Waring
C Exposito/Joseph
LF Hoes
CF Avery
RF Jason Pridie
DH Lew Ford/Steve Pearce
I don't know if I'm missing anyone. If Roberts doesn't make the team, Navarro or Flaherty figure to make it as the 2B or backup IF.

Yes, last year proved how important it was to have solid upper level depth when you are contending. I can think of 3 "scrap heap" players from last year who heavily contributed to our playoff run. McClouth, O'Day, and Gonzalez. There are also guys like Pearce, Ford, TOlleson who I wouldn't say heavily contributed but filled roles admirably at times. You also had Neshek, who we traded, pitching well for a playoff bound A's team down the stretch.
I love that DD makes all these no downside, only upside moves. Especially considering we don;t have very much solid depth as far as our own prospects go. I guess that is the one negative in all of this is that by signing all these guys it shows you the lack of depth your own system has developing players, even if they're only AAA/AAAA players.
