I don't think we can get Castellanos for Johnson but I would be asking.
If I am right and we can't, maybe we can trade Johnson in a 3 team deal and get back a young first or third baseman from another team?

I've heard that they are in love with Castellanos and won't move him for anyone, which sucks cause I've been smitten with him since he played in the UA Showcase game in CHI.

Castellanos probably won't be a factor in 2013 and Martinez is only signed through 2014. After then, they'll be able to slide Cabrera or Fielder to DH and Castellanos in at 3B. If he's looking really studly, and Martinez isn't a complete failure coming back from his injury, then they should be able to trade Martinez in his final year and give 3B to Castellanos for the 2014 season.Better hope he can play the OF.

Granted, Kobernus is a Rule 5 guy and we'd have to keep him on our active roster all year but I think he could prove useful as a bench guy - provides more upside with the bat than Flaherty and has plenty of speed.

Sure...but on a team built to win now, that means you are 2-3 from getting anything out of him at this level, in all likelihood.Castellanos probably won't be a factor in 2013 and Martinez is only signed through 2014. I think there is a better chance he is dealt or fizzles out vs getting really meaningful at bats for Det.

A Rule V guy who can't hit a lick and a 21 y/o SS with a sub-300 career OBP no higher than A+ in return for Jim Johnson? If I'm the O's and I'm talking to the Tigers than I'm asking about Jeff Kobernus and Hernan Perez as pieces to be included in any deal.
I know you didn't specifically say that those two would be the entire package, but I wouldn't trade Troy Patton for just those two.

This is pretty much their plan. They've got hopes that Martinez can actually catch and slide Miggy to DH here and there, but I don't think Castellanos is quite ready anyway, so that's a moot point until late 2013 at the earliest.
They want to use Nick to get younger, not as trade bait, and have gone as far as to tell teams he is not being traded...period.

No, they wouldn't constitute anything close to the entire package but I would definitely see if either or both of those guys could get thrown in. For nothing else other than depth at the minor league level and a speedy infielder off the bench.
if we stuck with Flaherty as a rule 5 pick all season last year than pretty sure we can manage having Kobernus stick.

I know Kobernus is more of a speed guy, but as a 24 y/o at AA he put up a 282/325/333/658 line, and hasn't done anything at lower levels earlier in his career to suggest he's capable of much better. Flaherty had a 305/384/523/907 line as a 24 y/o in two thirds of season at AA in 2011 (then put up a crappy line at AAA to finish out the year). Flaherty was vastly more prepared and capable of lasting on a roster than Kobernus appears to be, and Flaherty struggled pretty bad anyways. No, they wouldn't constitute anything close to the entire package but I would definitely see if either or both of those guys could get thrown in. I don't think he has much hope of lasting a month on anyone's MLB roster. Yet alone all season on a projected-to-be-contender's roster.

Maybe not, but for a team that leans on the lightening-in-a-bottle methodology of filling in the team it wouldn't hurt to have him as a throw in.
