ESPN: A new backup for Lamar Jackson: former Cowboys free-agent QB Cooper Rush reached agreement today on a two-year contract worth up to $12.2 million with the Baltimore Ravens, per me and @JFowlerESPN.

Seems like 4.2 guaranteed, hopefully that “up to” 12.2 means significant playing time incentives.

Wow, they're adding a legitimate back-up QB.

Obviously, like most teams, the Ravens are only a legitimate threat as long as Lamar is healthy on on the field, but Rush gives me much more confidence to win a game or two than Josh Johnson or Tyler Huntley or RGIII.

At least he could keep them semi-competitive. With Johnson, it would have been utter futility.

Right, Johnson would've been a disaster had they actually needed him to step in.

Weird the type of QB they went after, though. I figured they'd stick with a somewhat mobile QB in the Lamar mold rather than a pure pocket type.

Lamar is running a pretty standard system and playbook now. Certainly some extra stuff they can do with him they couldnt do with others but Monken would just cut some of the stuff out if Lamar went down

Interesting that they are investing that much in a backup QB. Not something they have traditionally done. Guess they don’t think Leary could give them any reasonable chance if he had to play a game or two.

I'd use the cap space elsewhere and take my chances with a late round rookie or minimum salary vet. But get the appeal of a competent backup, no idea if Rush is actually competent but guess he fits if they think he does. No complaints.

He is competent. Its just one of those things. If Lamar goes down for 2-4 weeks a quality backup may be what saves your season. But if Lamar misses zero games or if he misses a lot of games it feels like a waste of money.

Interesting.  Rush is a backup who could get the team through a month is LJ got injured.  I think the Ravens were fortunate that Johnson did not have to play a meaningful down last year.  The price seems high, but Rush is far better than Huntley, Johnson etc.

Guess I'm skeptical that Cooper Rush is significantly better than a cheaper backup and that the difference between the two over a few weeks could mean an extra win. Hope we don't have to find out if the insurance policy is worth the cost.

I thought the exact same thing when I saw it. I thought somebody on Facebook was trolling me for a second.

I think he's OK for 1-3 games but beyond that, they've got problems.

That's pretty much every  backup in the league. I'll take him over Johnson though. That's for sure.

Is there a backup QB in the league that can get a team through a full season?

Depends on who the starter is. Some of them aren't much better than the back up.

Fair enough.

As far as backup QB's go, Rush is probably at or near the top.

IMO the Ravens haven't had a legitimate QB 2 in a number of years.  Rush is a definite upgrade.

Yes, he is definitely an upgrade. They've been really rolling the dice with Josh Johnson.

Johnson is basically a forfeit if he's needed to step in and play.

Rush can give you a chance to win a couple games if he's needed.

Never thought I'd see a fellow alumnus as QB for the Ravens! :-P
