Kimbrel needs a very easy inning so he can come out for the 10th if we don't score. Otherwise this a mistake.

 

It is sort of standard practice to put the closer in when you're at home - hold the tie and win it in the bottom.

Right but that standard practice assumes a standard 10th which is no longer the case.

Hyde knows this and did it very well with Bautista. He didn't hold him for the 10th, but he often let him pitch both 9th and 10th because of the K potential. Kimbrel doesn't have the multi inning ability anymore, so was a good idea from Steve to give the lesser reliever the easier job in the 9th than the heavy lift of the 10th.

I think that's historically been the logic. And I think that;s flawed and should change now with the ghost runner and who is available in your bullpen. A high K rate pitcher is really needed for the 10th.

Unfortunately the record won't reflect he won, but guy deserves a game ball or something for that showing in his first MLB game in 7 years.

Suarez is yet another great find by the FO. Was hoping he’d make the team out of ST. Despite a mid-5 ERA in AAA had a 17/1 strikeout to walk ratio (was 19/2 in ST). Fastball is elite, should transition to a bullpen role nicely when we’re healthy in the rotation.
