Post says up to 20 being searched for? Anything more than 0 is too many. Unreal that something like this happens. Just awful!

Holy shit. This is horrible, hope they can find some survivors but can't imagine any.
What shipping line was it? How does a captain not see an effing bridge coming?
Asleep, under the influence of something maybe?
FWIW they have ruled out an act of terrorism.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note
"Now OPS sucks. Got it."
"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."
"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

These ships have dedicated pilots that commandeer them into and out of the harbor. The ship’s captain doesn’t control the vessel once it arrives at a certain point in the Chesapeake Bay.

The next Francis Scott Key Bridge will should have a significantly wider shipping channel as well as concrete barriers out away from the bridge. Both steps were implementations made during the rebuilding of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge back in 1980.

Apparently the boat's crew sent out a mayday which allowed for law enforcement (stationed on the bridge) to stop traffic, or stop more vehicles from entering it. Sounds like it could have been much worse.

Man, what a feeling of hopelessness to be on that boat with no power plowing right into the support.

Imagine if this happened at rush hour, it's be hundreds of people.
Are the huge shipping companies liable for disasters like this or do they use legal magic to make every voyage it's own LLC and just bankrupt that for some pittance of millions rather than the tens and maybe hundreds of billions of damage this just caused?
The shipping company, or more accurately their insurer, will end up paying billions, and have a black eye when the investigation no doubt reveals whatever caused the ship to lose power was very avoidable and likely the result of cutting corners to save money. But much like Exxon after dumping 11M gallons of oil into Prince William Sound thanks to a drunk captain, I'm sure they'll come out of this just fine financially-speaking.
