Post says up to 20 being searched for?  Anything more than 0 is too many.  Unreal that something like this happens.  Just awful!

Holy shit. This is horrible, hope they can find some survivors but can't imagine any.

What shipping line was it? How does a captain not see an effing bridge coming?

Asleep, under the influence of something maybe?

FWIW they have ruled out an act of terrorism.

Imagine if this happened at rush hour, it's be hundreds of people.

Are the huge shipping companies liable for disasters like this or do they use legal magic to make every voyage it's own LLC and just bankrupt that for some pittance of millions rather than the tens and maybe hundreds of billions of damage this just caused?

Apparently the boat lost power

What a nightmare. This is such a horrible time to be alive.

Absolutely terrible. Truly horrifying/surreal seeing the footage.

Just glad it didn’t happen at 7am. This is going to be catastrophic for the port/city/region for years.

Chaudhary Parvez on X: "Clear Video of Traffic movement on Bridge before hit by a ship At least 20 vehicles were on the bridge. #keybridge #baltimore #Ship #FrancisScottKeyBridge #bridgecollapse #USA #BREAKINGNEWS #Baltimore #Maryland #BREAKING https://t.co/NkH36hQ8Qp" / X (twitter.com)

Video of the collapse. Crazy that it fell so quickly.

News earlier said it took 5 years to construct the bridge.

First thought I have is for those who lost their lives and their families / friends.

Second thoughts are definitely on the impact to the port.

Immediate response seems well coordinated... but this is going to take massive work at local, State, and Federal levels for sometime.

News conference I saw at 6:30 said 2 people had been rescued. One refused medical treatment, the other went to trauma.

Maybe blocking off the harbor for a while will jumpstart the effort to make the water swimmable? Any small silver lining...

I mean obviously that isn't gonna happen, they'll dredge up the bride pieces blocking the waterways and restore harbor access as the top priority, maybe start that before they're even done pulling bodies.

These ships have dedicated pilots that commandeer them into and out of the harbor. The ship’s captain doesn’t control the vessel once it arrives at a certain point in the Chesapeake Bay.

The next Francis Scott Key Bridge will should have a significantly wider shipping channel as well as concrete barriers out away from the bridge. Both steps were implementations made during the rebuilding of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge back in 1980.

Makes sense.

It's unfortunate that it takes a tragedy to implement some of these things. In retrospect, it seems like the concrete barriers should have been set in place decades ago. Kind of difficult to believe that this wasn't recommended at some point either.

Apparently the boat's crew sent out a mayday which allowed for law enforcement (stationed on the bridge) to stop traffic, or stop more vehicles from entering it. Sounds like it could have been much worse.

Man, what a feeling of hopelessness to be on that boat with no power plowing right into the support.

The shipping company, or more accurately their insurer, will end up paying billions, and have a black eye when the investigation no doubt reveals whatever caused the ship to lose power was very avoidable and likely the result of cutting corners to save money. But much like Exxon after dumping 11M gallons of oil into Prince William Sound thanks to a drunk captain, I'm sure they'll come out of this just fine financially-speaking.

FYI, Captain doesn’t bring a cargo ship in or out, it is port pilot who is an expert in the shipping lanes. Captain is just along for the ride at that point.
