Of course its insane to think any player is worth a couple of wins in April. But just for the record its not about a single player. With Holliday in the lineup does that elevate the other players? And the flip side is also possible. No Holliday in the lineup means some other player IS in the lineup. Are they close to Holliday in April value, better, or perhaps worse? The point was not that Holliday was worth a couple of wins but would the team be?

 

In short it seems the overwhelming answer here is to just send him down no matter what he does in ST.

Yaz was playing LF in Fenway. He was not more valuable than Bonds. Not that anyone would really argue for Yaz but I need to make sure this is known

 

It's playing time that makes the difference.  Yaz had 680 PA.  Bonds had 550-620 3 of those 4 years (664 the 4th).  His hitting was far superior, with OPS+ in the 260s compared to 193 for Yaz, or as high as 12.4 oWAR compared to 9.9 for Yaz.  But the pretty big defensive advantage from Yaz (Yaz was graded as being very good and Bonds was godawful by that point) and an extra 10-20% playing time to accrue makes it close.

 

Nobody has ever hit as well as Bonds did in those seasons.  Even Ruth's best season was a 255 OPS+, which Bonds exceeded 3 freaking times.  Ridiculous.

Bonds 232 walks and .609 OBP in 2004 is beyond mind boggling.
