The biggest reason for their recent surge has been the return of star guard Terrence Shannon, Jr., who was granted a preliminary injunction against Illinois which made him eligible to play. He'd been suspended since he was arrested and charged with rape at the end of December. Since coming back to the team, he's averaging 20 points per game and scored 31 in their last matchup against Michigan.
Since joining the Big Ten, Maryland has lost to Illinois just once in College Park (in January, 2019).
EDIT: That game actually took place in New York, so Maryland has never lost to Illinois in College Park as members of the Big Ten Conference.
