Hope nobody got too attached to Livan Soto, he was DFA'd today.  They claimed Diego Castillo from the Phillies and needed the 40-man spot.  Exciting times!

He’ll pass through waivers and become a prospect for us. Still some upside and two options remaining. More than one way to build depth.

He'll be 24 in three months. Has almost 2000 minor league at bats with a career OPS of .671. Oh but he has some options remaining. Yippee.

Just pulling your chain and I get the depth thing. But I just looked at the O's 40 man roster.

Seriously our minor league rosters are better than a bunch of these guys. Why are they on our 40 man?

Diego Castillo turns 27 this year and has 2700 minor league at bats. In the bigs 263 at bats with a .630 OPS.

Nick Maton turns 27 tomorrow. He has 438 ML at bats for an OPS of .667

Tyler Nevin tunrs 27 in 3 months. He has 266 ML at bats for an OPS of .611

These aren't some 20 year old kids with some future upside. These guys have been around for years and haven't cut it. What makes them 40 man roster guys?

Could mean that a number of prospects have a chance of making the team out of spring training. If so, then Norfolk is going to need a few warm bodies.

I totally get that. Just wondering why they put them on the 40 man? If Norfolk is short handed come mid march then go sign some warm bodies off the scrap heap....lol

It's sometimes easier to slip a guy through waivers during ST than many other times of the year. So you add a guy to your 40-man, then waive him and hope he clears. If he doesn't, oh well.

Exactly. It’s smart but certainly not exciting. The churn on the fringes.

Btw by “prospect” in regards to Soto I literally just meant he will be prospect eligible and in our system. Not sure if he would even make our top 50.

Ok makes sense. Thanks.
