Marvin Lewis, Mike Nolan, Rex Ryan, Chuck Pagano and now Mike McDonald have left for head coaching gigs. Mattison, Pees, and Martindale all landed on their feet after their time here as well. Pretty good stepping stone job. If we don't hire internally like we always do, I'm sure some really good coaches will be interested in the job.

Promote from within. Keep MacDonalds formula going.
I'll be pissed if they bring in Vrabel or something.

I think there will be other losses that may make promoting from within more difficult.

I also do not think Vrabel and Harbs are friendly enough for him to be the choice.

Anthony Weaver next if he doesn't become Commanders HC.

It's the sign of a well-run franchise. When nobody is looking to poach your personnel, that's when you're not doing it right.

I'm wondering if he'll be the one calling Seattle's defensive plays on Sunday. If not, I doubt there's any certainty that his success will translate to being a head coach, something he's never done on any level. If his talents are in being a defensive guru, then he should be the one calling the shots. I wish him the best but it always seems silly to me that these owners think because someone is a great coordinator, he'll be the same type of head coach.

Who else should they hire if not coordinators? Positional coaches? Scouts?

John Harbaugh checking in.

He was Special Teams coordinator. Not as prestigious as OC or DC, I'll agree. He's also one of maybe a handful of coaching hires as far back as I can recall who weren't OC or DC and jumped from positional or ST. Pats just hired Mayo, so there's a recent example.

Special Teams coordinator is just another position coach for me, with a fancier title. According to Wikipedia he was strictly the defensive backs coach in 2007 prior to the Baltimore job.
But yeah, I'd say it's very rare to not hire a coordinator / former HC.

I was just commenting on the expectations they have. Of course they're going to hire coordinators or other head coaches that have been fired.

So you're criticizing them being confident in the person they hire for a job? Does anyone ever - football or otherwise - hire someone for a job without being confident that they can do it? I don't understand this complaint.

Government does it all the time. ALL the time. Not trying to be snarky, it's just truth.

Its not a complaint. Just an observation of lofty expectations that probably more often than not, never translate to the same kind of success they had as coordinators. That's why I'm hoping he does call the defensive plays because he has talent in that area. Bottom line is, you just hope for the best. But just because MacDonald was a whiz as DC, that hardly guarantees he'll succeed as a head coach.
