Bautista to undergo elbow surgery next month

TJ surgery was inevitable for Bautista. #orioles just wanted to see if he could pitch in playoffs. Ran out of time to be a feasible option.

Won’t pitch again in 2023 or 2024.

Mike Elias said #orioles have signed Bautista to 2024 and 2025 contracts

Just pull his bed up to the Tommy John assembly line.  It's a line that goes on for miles.

TJS was inevitable but wanted to see if he could rehab enough to pitch in the playoffs? Doesn't matter much in the grand scheme, but weird.

From what I’ve read you can pitch without a UCL, RA Dickey was born without one, so it was possible. But you likely won’t be throwing 101. I imagine he did his simulated games and was throwing like 90, so it’s just not going to be the same, might as well have surgery.

Do they have a special Tommy John contract, or is this typical around the league? They did the same thing with Means.

TJ isn’t 100%, so in theory they could have dumped him next offseason if rehab doesn’t go well. But in practice there’s no way he doesn’t get tendered for 2025 to see how it goes.

My guess is the arb comps are just pretty clear when guys miss a year, so there’s no reason to fight it, just sign now and guarantee what you get. No reason for either side to wait, just lock it in and it’s something you don’t have to worry about.

I feel bad for Felix.  He deserved to play in the playoffs as much as anyone.

Nice that they signed him for 2 years.

It was worth a shot to see if he could pitch this post season, but never really likely.  Heal fast Felix.

Yeah its def insurance for the player should things go wrong or its really slow. To have 2025 guaranteed. A nice gesture by the team.

His 2024 season is a Team Control year so it's just 700k and that's a given.  2025 is ARB1 but not having pitched in 2024 (or late 2023) means his arbitration $ will be modest.  So it's probably 1M plus/minus.

It's largely meaningless, but it's a gesture of some guarantee for Felix.

There's no risk on the part of the Orioles.  This is for the narrative, not the merit.

Did it truly not make a difference in delaying the surgery for when he could come back? Seems like another option would have been to get it done ASAP and maybe he could be back end of 2024? Or is that just not possible for a pitcher?

Wildly unlikely. I can't recall anyone doing it recently in under a year, usually multiple months more.

Not surprised.

The team was going to wait until the last possible moment to see if he could somehow pitch in the playoffs.

They'll need to make a move for next season to get a quality closer in here.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Tyler Wells should get a long look at the closer role. He's not built for starting and stuff plays up in the BP. Still should be looking for a quality BP arm or two.
