https://fansided.com...-million-spent/

Not sure if he updates this from time to time, but it is interesting.

Excerpt:

MLB standings: Divisional standings ordered by money spent for wins
First, let’s take a look at the American League by division.

AL East
Baltimore Orioles — 1.5 (+1)
Tampa Bay Rays — 1.48 (-1)
Toronto Blue Jays — 1.43 (+1)
Boston Red Sox — 0.44 (No change)
New York Yankees — 0.33 (-2)

Ultimately, not a huge shock here. The Orioles have plenty of young players yet are threatening for the division lead. The Rays have won a lot but spend much more. The Yankees spend lavishly and don’t win as much as they should.

This shouldn’t be celebrated or acknowledged IMO.

I'm not, and I don't think the writer is advocating for teams to resist spending money, but it may indicate a change of course is in progress in MLB; not exactly moneyball, but maybe more prudent use of team money. I am all for the O's opening that purse for a TOR SP or a power LH bat, but the success of especially our guys and TB cannot be ignored.

Money is a tool.  There's a number of tools.  Every team has an identity and mostly none of them are the same.  It's about finding (and selling) your approach.

I haven't done this this year yet, but there's probably a negative correlation between Wins and Payroll so far.  What does that actually mean?  Absolutely nothing, but it's nothing when there is something modestly in the other direction too.

Build the best Talent you can acquire.  Show up.  Play your ass off.  Period.
