After clinching bowl eligibility with a win over Rutgers last weekend, Maryland has been selected to play Virginia Tech in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. This will be the team's first bowl game since the 2016 season. The game will take place at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx, NY. The Hokies finished the 2021 season with a 6-6 (4-4 ACC) record, and will be led by interim head coach J.C. Price after they fired Justin Fuente on November 16th.

 

Following their season-opening upset of North Carolina, Virginia Tech was briefly ranked in the Top 25 until losing to West Virginia in their third game. They also clinched bowl a bowl berth last weekend with a 29-24 win over Virginia.

Maryland owns a slim 16-15 lead in the head-to-head against Virginia Tech, with the majority of their meetings coming before 1950. The last time these two teams met was in 2013, when the Terps won an overtime thriller in Blacksburg to clinch bowl eligibility. That win snapped a five-game winning streak by the Hokies dating back to 1993.

I see the Hokies lost to West Virginia, but they played Notre Dame tough losing 32-29.

Virginia Tech has had 5 starters opt out of this game so far. OL Lecitus Smith, WR Tre Turner, DL Amare Barno, DL Jordan Williams, and CB Jermaine Waller will all be absent.

They’ll also be without starting WR Tayvion Robinson and backup QB Knox Kadum after they entered the transfer portal.

Maryland has released their depth chart for this game, which features the return of RB Challen Faamatau. His injury was thought to be season-ending, but he’ll be able to return against the Hokies. Deshawn Holt has also returned to practice, and will split snaps at SAM with Demeioun Robinson.

Your post got me to thinking.  I wonder how many of the Maryland kids know who Vince was.  They may not even make the connection to the SB trophy.
