The new building will be built where the parking lot to the south currently is, not on the footprint of the existing market building, so vendors shouldn't be disrupted except when they move. When complete the old building will be razed and converted to green space.

 

As for prices, I'm sure that will be a reflection of what the vendors pay in rent in the new space vs the current one.

I still think they need some other kind of anchor in that immediate area to draw more people. Most of the attractions on the west side of downtown that bring in people are south of Fayette St....the arena, the Hippodrome, UMMC, OPACY, etc. Maybe it's changed since I left, but the quote in that Sun article seemed to indicate it hasn't. Few if any people that visit the places I mentioned bothered to go up to Lexington Market, especially when there were plenty of restaurants and bars closer to those attractions.

Somewhat related...the recently renovated Fells Point Market is fantastic.  I haven't been to Cross St since they remodeled, but I think it's pretty similar.

At one time, Lexington Market was popular a place to take families.  As a kid, we used to go to Lexington Market, every other Saturday.  My parents would be meats to last 2 weeks, then we would go to a Bakery, probably the one in the picture, and have lunch and desert.

 

I have not been in LM for probably 30 years.  It is nice to see them remodeling it.  The bigger job will be to take back the surrounding streets and maybe even the light rail to allow people to get down and back easily and safely.

Surrounding area could use a facelift and good scrubbing but it's not as bad as people make it out to be. Especially if you use the Paca St entrance, which is the side of the market Faidley's is on.

 

Very excited to see how the market is improved by this rehab. It's been a long time coming.

Great Italian Deli store there too.  Trinacrias, been there for a very long time.

Hands down my favorite deli in the area. However, didn’t know they had a spot in the market. They used to have a spot farther up the street, but opened a new spot on Center st about 5 or 6 years ago. If you’re looking for Trinacrias without the hassle of the market.

What I loved about growing up in Baltimore were the markets. Monument St, Broadway, Cross St.
