Ruh-roh.

I don't know that the NCAA can prove much with the $67K in credit, but I'm sure they want to get to the bottom of where the $30K down payment came from. Alone, it doesn't sound like an egregious scandal. But if an investigation uncovers more.....ruh-roh.

It's going to be interesting. He could have a well off family, a trust fund, etc...

However, Duke did have to pull him away from Rutgers and some were surprised he chose Duke, so you never know.

Personally, I think every school cheats, so it is what it is...but you have to be smart and not get caught.

This is such a dookie thing to say. I never heard anyone on any of the UNC blogs saying this throughout the football scandal.

I am going to just sit back and wait for this to somehow get swept under the rug, as has been the case every other time there was scandal at dook (see Maggette/Piggie and Chris Duhon's mom).

Corey Maggette/Myron Piggie: http://rivals.yahoo.... ... afavorites

Chris Duhon's mom (from New Orleans Times-Picayune, April 3, 2003): http://www.truthabou.../duhon_nola.php

I should mention that the Duhon thing also happened with Carlos Boozer's father.

If the NCAA were to come down on dook for all these things, they'd have vacated their 1999 runner up (Maggette), 2001 championship (Duhon/Boozer), 2004 Final Four (Duhon), and 2010 championship (Thomas). Meaning the last time they'd have a recognized visit to the Final Four would be 1994. Not such a great program after all, eh?

LEt me guess...you are foolish enough to think that the UNC bball team had no connection with the UNC football scandal?

How naive are you? Scandal, cheating, lying, etc...Its involved in anything that has to do with the amount of money being thrown around. Add to that jobs, pressure, etc...You would be foolish to assume that cheating isn't happening everywhere.

As for Duke...If they cheated(knowingly or unknowingly), they should get punished under the bs NCAA rules. They are what they are. Doesn't make it any less of a program though...just as UNC's program isnt worse because of the issues going on there.

If Duke had to vacate a championship, then it would be a major black eye for the program and would really tarnish the pristine nature of K's resume.

I don't think it would have a major impact on the program, but it would have a major impact on how the program is perceived in a historical context. It won't be the first thing you think of when you think of Duke basketball or when it is brought up long after K is gone, but it will be in the opening paragraph. Even if it's pretty much a technicality, nobody else has had to vacate a championship (at least until Calipari inevitably ends up having to).

Totally agree...But court of public opinion/media perceptions are meaningless to me(and this has nothing to do with Duke..this is everything...Bonds, Clemens, etc...).

But yes, it would be a black eye for them(and K), no doubt.

I will say this...Duke had a tough battle with Rutgers to get Thomas there...They could have promised a payment to him. It wouldn't surprise me. I have always felt that every big time program is dirty one way or another...and that includes Duke, my team.

Its like being pissed off at a steroid user in football or baseball..everyone else is doing it.

What would piss me off is that Duke paid for Thomas, a mediocre player and not a true difference maker. :D

I'm sure they paid off the good players as well, they just also did a better job of explaining to them how not to flash the money around :D

Yea seriously. And what about the jewelry Thomas bought? Ugly crap too! LOL

It will be interesting to watch though.

I don't care who breaks the rules..Whether its ND football, Duke/UNC bball, Bama football, etc...They should be punished based on the NCAA rules...but it will be interesting to see how the NCAA handles this.

Of course, we really have no idea what the case is here...Maybe Thomas had the money from a trust fund? Maybe his parents were well off? Who the hell knows.

Remember something, Thomas came in around the same time the program had been struggling to advance in the tourney. Could they have tried to do something to get a competitive edge? Sure. I think it would be naive for any fan of any team to think that their team wouldn't do something like this. You may not want to believe they would do it...you may hope that they wouldn't..but to sit there and say, no way it would happen to my team is naive and foolish.

You are making moral equivalencies between paying for travel for an employee and finding a new recruit's mother a high-paying job for which she was completely under-qualified?

Yes, Peppers played basketball, but he was a football player first and foremost. In fact, if you'll notice, UNC had numerous crossover players in the years just prior to Roy Williams taking over (Peppers, Ron Curry, David Noel. He put an end to that, knowing there were some questionable practices going on on the football side. After Peppers and Noel, who Williams inherited and in Noel's case put a stop to, there have been no crossover players.

Other than the one game Ty Lawson got suspended for, I'm pretty sure you aren't going to dig up anything on Coach Williams or Coach Smith.

It figures. If he was giving an illegal benefit to begin with, why would he speak to the NCAA to indict the program he was helping out.

The stupid thing, though, is that even threatening to speak to the NCAA might help him get his money back (or at least a settlement) quicker.

I think it's smart for him not to be talking. He'd probably lose future business (NCAA allowed or not) if he turns in and is reporting his customer to the NCAA sanctions people.

So here's the deal on the Hansbrough "scandal":

The parties involved were Matt Kupec, a former UNC quarterback and vice-chancellor at Carolina, and UNC fundraiser Tami Hansbrough, a former Miss Missouri, and yes, mother of Tar Heel basketball great Tyler Hansbrough.

Kupec had served as UNC's Vice Chancellor for University Development, meaning he was Carolina's chief fundraiser. Hansbrough came to Carolina in 2009 as a fundraiser for the dental school foundation but was later appointed to a fundraising position in the student affairs division. Hansbrough, who was divorced, began a relationship with Kupec, who eventually separated and later filed for divorce from his wife.

Questions about the relationship between Kupec and Hansbrough began to surface, and other questions about travel supposedly taken for university business and an internal investigation revealed that Kupec and Hansbrough charged trips to the university that were not for official business. Many of those trips involved travel to see Ben Hansbrough, Tyler's younger brother, who played for Notre Dame, as well as a couple to see Tyler play for the Indiana Pacers.

Kupec resigned on Sunday, and Tami Hansbrough resigned yesterday.

It has been revealed that Kupec facilitated the creation of the position and arranged for it to report to the student affairs division to avoid nepotism regulations since the relationship between Kupec and Hansbrough was out in the open.

What does this have to do with the African American Studies Department academic scandal or the football sanctions at UNC right now? Absolutely nothing, other than giving another black eye to a university that has already been on the wrong end of a bar fight. None of this has anything to do with athletics, or even academics. The details are a soap opera and are made more juicy because both Kupec and Hansbrough have a relationship to athletics, but really neither has a real connection. If these two were not well-known names, it would be an important story but not one that makes headline news.

Perhaps the biggest fallout to come from this is the departure of Kupec, who was an excellent fundraiser. Despite the football and academic problems of late, one thing that has remained constant is UNC's fundraising ability on the academic side. Now with Kupec gone, that area might be problematic. The fallout is likely to be the tenuous position of Chancellor Holden Thorp. As long as Kupec kept the academic dollars coming in, Thorp was insulated from some of the football effects. It also seems clear that Thorp knew of the Kupec/Hansbrough relationship and still allowed Hansbrough to assume the fundraising position, and he allowed Kupec to move it out of the University Advancement office to avoid regulations.

The main problem with people who focus on money is that way too often they don't know when to quit. For some reason, the line between right and wrong, legal and illegal, gets replaced with the sociopathic creed of "If you can get away with it, then it's OK. The only thing that's wrong is not getting away with it".
